The Rule of Thirds is an excellent guide to follow when framing a shot. With this rule, you divide the frame of a shot into thirds, using imaginary lines - two horizontal and two vertical - breaking the frame up into nine boxes. The lines then intersect at four points. It looks like a tic-tac-toe board. To create a visually pleasing composition, you should place your shot's primary focus at one of the intersecting points. 💡⁣

From the very start of your news package, you want to hook your viewers! Two essential elements for beginning a story are the open and the lead.

🔹 The OPEN is the first visual shot of the news package that hooks the viewer. Reporters often use an establishing shot for the open, giving the viewers information on where the story occurs.

🔹 The LEAD is the first line of audio in the news story. A reporter’s track, sound bite, or nat sound are all possible types of audio tracks to use as a lead.

In a news package, you will often see a shot of the reporter on-camera, speaking directly to the viewer. A reporter-led shot is called a Standup, and they help fill in information gaps within the story. The reporter sticks to the story's facts during a standup and avoids giving personal opinions.

While on location, production will often record natural sound, called NAT Sound for short. 🎙

Your camera’s microphone will record a lot of the natural sound of a location when shooting footage. However, it is beneficial to take the time to focus solely on the sound and record several minutes of NAT Sound at each new location, preferably with a separate audio recording device and high-end microphone. This will give you extra sound to work with during the edit.

Showing only the reporter or people talking to the camera would be boring! To enhance a news package, B-ROLL is used to engage the viewers. B-roll is additional footage that plays over the top of the reporter’s audio track or interview sound bites. This footage should visually and truthfully clarify and expand on the story. ⁣

An Out Cue happens at the very end of a news package and includes the news stations' call letters and the reporter's name.

The Out Cue helps alert the control room crew and news anchor that the news package is ending. This gives everyone a heads up that they are moving on to the next part of the news broadcast.
