SENEGAL: Senegal's Hann Bay struggles against waste and pollution - A view of an insect-covered watermelon rind in Hann Bay in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, once considered one of Africa's most beautiful bays for its 20 kilometers of fine sandy beach, is now overwhelmed by piles of trash on October 22, 2024. The concentration of manufacturing industries in the area and their discharge of waste into Hann Bay has transformed it into a garbage dump and has also contributed to serious ocean pollution; many parts of the bay's beach are no longer visible, and experts are warning about the high levels of bacteria present in the region. (BURKINA FASO) - Jacqueline Taonsaon balances a plate of strawberries on her head as she rides on her bicycle to the market in Ouagadougou on March 28, 2024. In the suburbs of Ouagadougou, the round leaves of strawberries are replacing cabbage and salads. An "oddity" in the heart of the Sahel, Burkina strawberries invade the stalls of local markets, a "red gold" which is now also exported beyond the borders, Image: F***y Noaro-Kabre/AFP
