Canada yanks American booze off the shelves after getting hit with tariffs, and suddenly Trump world is acting like Canada declared economic war. This is the same Donald Trump who tore up NAFTA, rebranded it as CUSMA, slapped his name on it, and called it the greatest trade deal in history. Now his allies are threatening to blow it up anyway because Canada won’t just sit there and take it. So which is it, the best deal ever or totally meaningless the second Trump wants leverage?
David Eby saying “no chance in hell” those products are coming back is basically what happens when you deal with a partner who treats agreements like expired coupons.
Trump’s entire trade strategy has always been sign something, brag about it, then ignore it when convenient and blame the other side for reacting. And now the complaint is that Canada is “unfair” for responding to tariffs with... responses. That’s not unfair trade, that’s basic cause and effect.
What this really shows is that Trump style dealmaking is less about policy and more about performance. Big announcement, big signature, big claims, and then chaos when reality kicks in. Canada is playing defense inside a system Trump himself created, and somehow still gets cast as the problem. At some point it stops being negotiation and starts looking like economic trolling with a press release.
