Put a longtime bucket list filmmaking tool in the arsenal last night. A Super16mm Arri SR.
Super 16mm conversion done by the late-great Bernie O’Daugherty at Super16mm Inc. He’s converted all three of our Super16mm camera packages now. If Bernie did it. You know it was done right. That guy was the camera whisperer.
The arri SR and SRII were the German Fraulines whom first taught me how to shoot on film 20 yrs ago. It seems like yesterday since Kevin Richey was showing me 400 ft loads of Vision 2 7218 stock in Louis Hall explaining that 133 meters of motion picture stock would roughly equate to over 10 minutes of raw footage once processed and transferred.

The Stones playing Tumblin Dice last night. At times Keith’s drummer from X-Pensive Winos (filling-in for the late Charlie Watts’) contribution helped the guys soar to new heights during crescendos and solos. At other times, even when he was technically pulling his right hand off the hi-hats on downstrokes of the snare, there are few drummers with as unique a voice and style as Watts and I never noticed how well that style was dialed into Richard’s upstroke strumming tuned in open G...over 50 years of musical muscle memory performing together is so much of what gives the stones their signature sound and it really can’t be duplicated. at times last night it was augmented (especially when Daryl Jones steps into the limelight on bass-heavy standards. Where it felt different and certainly almost caused near train wrecks on Paint It Black, Sympathy for The Devil and Satisfaction...but the guys kept it together. Ronny Wood seemed more energetic and frenetic than ever. Keith taking over lead vocal duties on Connection has never sounded more perfectly jagged around the edges. All-in-all goddam inspiring watching these boys still tear it up 58 yrs into the band’s career. #rollingstones #nofiltertour #tumblindice

9 years ago today, Act Naturally screened at Historic Circle Cinema in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I didn’t have too many expectations going into the fest. The only people I knew from Oklahoma were my sales rep, @mrjasonconnell and one of my fellow students in film school @latchamj (both of whom, I thought highly). That said, I did not anticipate selling too many tickets. So, naturally I brought my dad with me.
I’ve never been so happy to be wrong in my life. Tulsa proved to be an outstanding screening thanks to the good folks at @oaklaketrails, Jason Connell’s home court advantage and the absurdly nice staff @circlecinema. I discovered a thriving local independent film scene in the local films screened. Turned out to be one of my favorite stops on the festival tour of 75 cities. So much so, we went back for several additional screenings before the end of the year.
Strike date set for Monday the 18th at 12:00am, kids. Seems not only does the AMPTP not wanna take the gun out of their mouth...they like the taste of the metal. #iatsestrike
Might I just take a moment of your time to tell you how excited I am after viewing just 30 seconds of the TIFF festival teaser trailer for Justine Bateman’s very auspicious directorial debut, VIOLET. As a filmmaker, fanatic of expert cinema and all-around fan of the movies. In 30 seconds Bateman had my full support and devotion to this film. Why? Here’s the deal:
1. Out of the gate it grabs you with an extreme, long-lensed, shallow depth of field close- up of Olivia Mann listening to her inner-monologue voiced brilliantly with the tone of a caustic, self-loathing-motivational life-coach by Justin Theroux. Imagine if the son of the Drill Sargent in Full-Metal Jacket had a daughter. And she grew up to be a Development Executive in Tentpole filmmaking. Exactly the sort of job that someone of this nature who be at first seducer by then commanded by and eventually abused this sort of self-imposed bottomless pit of ambition career path.
2 Next thing to love. The title, placement of the text reinforcing the voice inside her head. In aluminum white cursive penmanship...literally driving the point home with writing on the screen. It’s fitting for this character. not so indie in its pretense it makes you groan for trying too hard. It’s hand is on the throttle just right. because you instantly know this person suffers reading poor penmanship and grammatically atrocious word-crimes at the mercy of people who dare call themselves writers yet seemingly hold no regard for the King’s English.
3. The Cinematography is making some excellent and bold creative choices. A nuanced and forlorn close-up of Olivia Munn lost in thought is never going to fail to grab you. She’s easy to look at. But we don’t often (if ever) get to see her without an eye-light. That twinkle in a movie-stars eyes that plays a massive part for in them lighting up the screen. This character is dead inside. So she doesn’t get one. Those of us whom create these images professionally for pop-culture know the importance of a protagonist’s eye light. a gray background void of color framed by a vignette centering on herself. The quick cutaways to flashes of trauma. Dirty gates. Torn perf. PERFECT! #violetfilm @ Los Angeles, California
I have a career that has been a giant bucket of win. I have worked with some of the world’s talented recording artists and thespians. And none of that would have been possible without the tireless hard work of the talented craftsman and artists on my crew. We’ve all managed to carve out some pretty amazing careers. This Strike might be a chance to have a life outside of my career. Cause I certainly do not have one of those. It implodes when I try and balance them both with the hours we work. #iatse

Just put the Curt Class 5 X-RAY XTRA Duty hitch on my truck. T’was a pretty painless install with really clear instructions. This beast a brick sh*thouse. Ready to tow all three sections of my prefab container home from Sutton Massachusetts back to LA. Got a new heavy duty transmission and beefed up rear suspension too. Still cheaper than shipping prices cross country right now. What would have been a $2200 shipping fee for each section is now $7100 per section. that’s the lowest estimate I got on U-Ship. RIP Ed Asner. A direct relative of Liz Lytle, whom portrays Charlie Tillerman in Act Naturally and Act Super Naturally, Ed Asner has passed away at 91. Our condolences, Liz.
