This Sunday at Delicious at The Dunbar, Mowatt Entertainment presents saxophonist Darryl "D Wake" Wakefield. D Wake plays sax for Grammy-nominated Motown artist KEM. His background runs through Pontiac, Michigan and Detroit's jazz rooms, including Baker's Keyboard Lounge. He's on from 2:30 to 4:30 PM, Sunday, October 4.
It's also the last week to catch Kenneth Gatewood: The Medium of Memory, the current exhibition from La Mancha Gallery's Arts @ Delicious series, hanging in the same dining room through [final date].

Saturday marked the 12th Annual Arts Pavilion at the Central Avenue Jazz Festival, and it was one for the books.
Twelve years ago, Councilman Curren D. Price Jr. gave this program its start. Every year since, he's backed it with the same trust, and this thank you goes out to him first. This doesn't exist without you, Councilman.
Thank you to our longtime partners — CRCD, the Central Avenue Jazz Festival organization, CCSCLA, and the Walk Talkin International team who keep the whole event running smoothly behind the scenes.
And thank you to the 17 artists who filled our tent this year with paintings, photography, live art, and everything in between: Kenneth Gatewood, Otha "Vakseen" Davis III, Skira Martinez, Bart Ross, Mohammed Mubarak, EnkOne, LP Ækili Ross, Riea Owens, Buena Johnson, Mike Norice, Jimmy Velarde, Lyric Cross, Wendell Wiggins, Arturo Sparza, Mario Hernandez, Bakari Santos, and Jefferey Stephenson.
Most of all, thank you to everyone who came out to Central Avenue, stopped by the tent, and supported these artists directly. Artists here keep 100% of their sales, so your support went right to them.

Saturday's the day. The Arts Pavilion returns for its 12th year as part of the 31st Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival — free admission, 11 AM to 7 PM, inside a 100-foot tent right on Central Avenue at 41st Street.

Seventeen artists this year, painters, photographers, printmakers, mixed-media folks, some who've been showing in the Pavilion since the early years and others bringing something newer to the space. Kenneth Gatewood is this year's Featured Artist — his mixed-media watercolors work vinyl records and gold leaf right into portraits of Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, and Otis Redding, and several pieces will be there for purchase. Riea Owens, one of our exhibiting artists, also created this year's official festival artwork, so if you've seen that image on a flyer or poster around the neighborhood, you can meet the person who made it in person.

This is also Councilmember Curren D. Price Jr.'s final year as the festival's central figure, so there's some extra weight to this one.

Come through, it's free, it's family friendly, and the art's for sale if something catches your eye.

SPOTLIGHT [ # #] // Bakari Santos
Carlos Henrique Silva dos Santos was born in Rio de Janeiro and started making art by hand at 14. He studied at UFRJ first, then moved to Salvador, Bahia and finished his fine arts training at UFBA — a path that took him through some of Brazil's deepest wells of Afro-diasporic and indigenous visual language before he ever left the country. He funded his travels across Latin America by selling his own work along the way.
He settled in Los Angeles in 1976. He sold on the boardwalk at Venice Beach before art became his full-time life, and over the decades since he's built a body of work in vibrant textiles, mixed media, and handcrafted design. Professionally he goes by Bakari Santos now, and he's been one of the people pushing Afro-Brazilian art and culture into the LA conversation for as long as he's been here.

Mario A. Hernandez works in whatever medium the story needs: murals, ceramics, computer graphics, short film. Art has been the constant thread through his life, from drawing to filmmaking, a lifelong journey of storytelling. Based in East LA, his work stays close to Chicano heritage and the everyday texture of the neighborhoods he grew up in.
By day he's Graphic Communications Manager at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, with the same role part-time at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument on Olvera Street. Off the clock, he runs Herdz Media, his own studio for photography and visual storytelling, and keeps Pachuco style alive through street and TikTok content as a Zoot Suiter.

Wendell Wiggins paints like someone who's never stopped believing in magic. Raised in Washington D.C. and based in Los Angeles for years now, he brings a wandering spirit into every canvas, pulling from personal experience, dreams, and the spiritual traditions he's picked up crossing Brazil, Central America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.
His work reaches past what you can see. "I often attempt to portray a world beyond physical sight," he says, "and to communicate mystical and spiritual ideas that transcend the physical and scientific worlds."
Wendell trained at Cal Arts and holds an MFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Design Graphics, Photography and Editorial Illustration, plus a BFA in Illustration, Graphic Design and Photography. His fine art has shown in solo and group exhibitions across Southern California's galleries and museums.
