Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 - 1945) was affectionately known as "FDR" and served as the thirty-second United States President from 1933 until his death. He was elected to a record four terms in office, a Democrat who governed during a time of worldwide depression and global warfare in the mid-twentieth century.

He defined American liberalism with the New Deal, spearheading widespread legislation and government spending through entitlement programs which redefined American politics. The New Deal coalition united labor unions, big city machines, white ethnics, African Americans, and rural white Southerners in support of the Democratic party.

Though the role of government has been reduced by subsequent conservative administrations, Roosevelt's legacy programs include Social Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wagner Act, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

During World War II, Roosevelt signed the indelibly damaging executive order to inter all Japanese Americans, resulting in loss of their dignity, property and businesses.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902) was a social activist, abolitionist, and suffragist credited with organizing the first women's rights and women's suffrage movements in the United States.

She was the principal author of The Declaration of Sentiments presented at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, signed by 68 women and 32 men, including Frederick Douglass, whose attendance helped strengthen the movement. The declarations advocated for civil, social, political, and religious rights of women.

It was a long-haul; women secured voting rights on August 26, 1920 -- seventy-two years after the initial gathering in Seneca Falls, NY.

Dwight David Eisenhower (1890 - 1969), also known as "Ike" was the thirty fourth United States president from 1953-1961.

He was a five-star general during World War II, serving as supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, before serving as President Harry Truman's Army chief of staff. Eisenhower was a Republican and campaigned against "communism, Korea and corruption," winning the election by a landslide against Democrat Adlai Stevenson.

He effectively ended the power of the New Deal Coalition which had been in place since President Franklin D. Roosevelt, yet he expanded the social security system. His goals in office were to keep pressure on Russia and reduce the federal deficit.

He openly opposed Joseph McCarthy and through executive privilege ended the era known as "McCarthyism." Eisenhower authorized the largest military build-up the nation had ever seen, presiding during the Korean War.

Yet in his 1961 farewell address to the nation, he cautioned against the dangers of "the military-industrial complex" which remains his legacy.

Abraham Lincoln

No American has ever been more American than Abraham Lincoln.

Out of our young but rich history, it is his life -- complete with failure, triumph and tragedy -- that we choose to believe in. It is in his story that we find a fundamentally American belief: That any American, blessed by the freedom of this country, can rise as high and as far as his or her talent and industry will carry them.

It was through Lincoln's writing and oratory that a singular and distinctive American voice emerged on the world stage. It was a voice no longer deeply bound by European traditions of thought and manners of prose; it was new and distinct and it's meter and style were as bold as the ideas it conveyed. Like the man, his words started coarse and plain but over time and with great effort an undeniable eloquence emerged. Here we present The Gettysburg Address, his most famous work, but also some lesser known but equally important artifacts.

They hold the words that helped to shape the nation. They are wonderful to read carefully; and to consider again and again.
