Vain Machine Vain Machine is an American alternative electronic project from Los Angeles, formed in 2013 by Omar M Quiñones and Beau Baker.

Blending industrial, EBM, synthpop, and futurepop, the duo crafts emotionally charged music. Formed and established in Los Angeles by Beau Baker and Omar Quiñones in 2013 – both veterans of the LA alternative music scene; the duo went on to self-release several singles through social media and online services. In 2014 the band signed to Manchester-based AnalogueTrash to release their first official single Push which gained popularity amongst the Los Angeles industrial/goth club scene, followed soon after by their debut full-length album Lost.

2015 saw Vain Machine continue to expand their audience, as they played a range of grassroots within California, eventually being invited to perform at the Dark Arts Festival in Salt Lake City and the Colorado Goth Festival in Colorado Springs. Later that year – and seeing a departure in sound from their earlier material – the single Eat You Alive was released on an AnalogueTrash label sampler; a track which received considerable airplay on online radio stations and downloads via Bandcamp. Fast forward to February of 2018, and a rework of the famous KISS song I Was Made For Lovin’ You was officially released as well as a collaboration on the title track of Black Violet with local Los Angeles artist Vió.. In late 2018 saw the band drop a three-track EP titled Harm, marking the band’s first original material to be released since 2015. The duo spent 2019 rebuilding the sound of the back catalog for live performances, recording new music, and playing gigs on both sides of the Atlantic.

2019 also saw the band embark on a small west coast tour with The Secret Light and Xibling, with gigs in Denver, Palm Springs, and Albuquerque, while November of that year saw Vain Machine embark on a career-defining UK tour, performing in Manchester and Birmingham and culminating with a rapturous reception at the final Beat:Cancer Festival at London’s infamous Slimelight. The visit was preceded by the release of Invisible, a radical reimagining of the Skylar Gray song, with proceeds from the track being donated to Project Semicolon, an organization dedicated to the prevention of suicide. Vain Machine shows no sign of slowing down in 2020, with a new EP Disconnect due for release in March in cassette and digital formats, and more live shows on the horizon. Drawing strength from adversity and adventure, each release sees Vain Machine getting stronger and stronger, both musically and lyrically. We can’t wait to find out where this exciting band goes next.

In my many years of performing on stage, there is one thing I have always noticed: there is almost always at least one member of the band who isn’t playing a fu***ng note.

More often than not, it’s the keyboardist.

Now, I understand that live performance is about the overall presentation. There are backing tracks, sequences, samples, triggers, and all kinds of things happening behind the scenes. I get it.

But you cannot fool one keyboardist into believing another keyboardist is actually playing.

I play my actual parts when I perform. Am I perfect? F**k no. I make mistakes live. I hit the wrong note. I occasionally f**k something up. But at least you know I’m actually playing something.

And honestly, with internationally established bands, I can understand why they do certain things. There are production demands, complicated arrangements, and a lot more going on.

But if you’re touring with a drummer and a keyboardist who isn’t actually playing s**t, why not just leave the keyboardist at home and tour with the drummer? More money in your pocket, trust me.

At least we know the drummer is playing something.

And this isn’t meant to disrespect anyone in our scene. I’ve seen it all over the years: lip-syncing, guitarists and bassists pretending to play, and my absolute number-one pet peeve…

The keyboardist who pretends to play.

At least make it convincing.

Don’t put your fingers on the exact same fu***ng key for an entire song. Move your hands. Hit another key. Give us something.

And if all you’re doing is starting the next song, that can easily be done by someone backstage.

Or, even better yet…

Let the drummer do it.

Because at least we know he’s actually playing.

And yes, I said it.

After a long time in the making, Vain Machine is officially returning to streaming platforms.

The catalog is rolling out now, with more releases appearing over the next several days. Along with the familiar albums, you’ll also see tracks that were previously locked away on compilation releases. For the first time, I have full control of my catalog, and I’m proud to finally make these songs available to everyone.

If you’ve ever enjoyed Vain Machine, I’d be grateful if you’d follow us on Spotify. It really helps support independent artists and lets you know the moment new music arrives.

Thank you for sticking with me through the years. More is on the way.

I'm deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Rexx Arkana, yet his enduring legacy shines brighter than ever, inspiring multitudes who found comfort and motivation in his art. Though I never had the chance to personally experience his music or meet him, his impact lives on, touching hearts and minds. Sending love and deepest condolences to his loved ones and friends, may his melodies continue to uplift and inspire, and may cherished memories of him remain a treasured blessing.
