The Hollywood Sound Museum

Friends of the Hollywood Sound Museum:

We hope everyone is staying safe & healthy during this very challenging time.

We at the Hollywood Sound Museum are still doing our best to move forward. We've made some amazing progress over the last year. But, unfortunately, with all that is happening in the world right now... if we are going to successfully open in the near future, as well as successfully receive grant funding, we're going to immediately need more of your help.

As you may know, we have been collecting some amazing materials to make available to you and future soundies through the Museum. In addition to the collection of classic sound effects from many films and studios I have personally gathered, we have the sound libraries from many sound legends… including Kay Rose, who was the first woman to win an Oscar for sound editing (“The River” 1984); David Lewis Yewdall, who collaborated on many of John Carpenter's films (“Christine,” “Escape from New York,” “The Thing”); and Alan Splet, who created the brilliant sounds for David Lynch (“Eraserhead,” “Elephant Man,” “Blue Velvet,” “Dune”).

In addition to those libraries and other sound effects collections, we have been gathering many other unique materials to share. We also have interviews with sound artists (many have never been heard before), articles on a variety of audio-related subjects, and videos on the making of many great film soundtracks.

Due to current events, we will shift our focus toward making our collections available online for access as soon as possible. We hope to intensify that effort over the next few weeks. However, your help is greatly needed NOW to make this happen. Please use the PayPal link below to make a donation today!

Your contributions will also be used toward the storage costs to keep all this material safe, as well as the scanning and digitizing of the collection. We will also be recording new materials that will be offered FIRST to our Museum contributors, as well as having online live-streaming chats with sound artists.

With your help getting us through the next couple months, we hope we can be ready when the current crisis ends and can once again pursue making The Hollywood Sound Museum a physical reality. We then hope to be receiving sustainable grants that will help us successfully continue our mission.

So please make a contribution, in ANY amount, to the PayPal address below. Each contribution over $30 will receive a Hollywood Sound Museum T-shirt. Contributions over $50 will receive a special CD with rare historic sound effects and their history, and a review of what the Museum hopes to offer in the future. Donations of $100 or more will receive special perks… and contributions of $500 or more will receive very special Museum recognition… both rewards to-be-announced.

Thank you, in advance, for your contribution. With your help we will continue to share the craft of entertainment audio with everyone.

Keep listening!

This is Steve Lee posting and NOT one of his interns who is working late at the shop and has access to all his social media. I have the best interns in Hollywood who work really hard and he should really take us to movie premieres and screenings and stuff because they're the BEST.
Sincerely,
Steve

Because the shots were delivered very late in post-production, the sounds of the creatures in the holographic chess game in "Star Wars" (1977) were mostly vocals performed by Sound Designer Ben Burtt himself!

Harvest Moon Motion Pictures & Television

Harvest Moon Motion Pictures & Television

For Immediate release:
Harvest Moon Motion Pictures is proud to announce that Sound Designer and Sound Effects Wrangler STEVE LEE has joined the crew of “The Possessed.” Through his company The Hollywood Radiophonic Laboratory, Lee will draw upon his experience from his almost 30 year career in film sound - and the vast sound effects library he’s collected in that time - to create the audio that will help bring The Possessed to life.

Having grown up listening and studying sound effects from early classic science fiction and horror films, Steve Lee began his career in 1988 at Weddington Productions. There he cataloged and managed the enormous collection of sound elements from their work on films such as “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Gremlins,” and “RoboCop.” Lee would go on to contribute sounds to almost every film that came through the company since, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Lion King,” “Apollo 13,” “The Fifth Element,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” and many others.

In 2010 Lee formed his own company, The Hollywood Radiophonic Laboratory, a place for creative and innovative sound effects design with old-school sensibilities. Lee is also in the early stages of forming The Hollywood Sound Museum, an organization dedicated to establishing a repository for audio created for entertainment media and its history, for education, research, & preservation.

We're thrilled to hear that one of our heroes, Delia Derbyshire, will have a street in her hometown named in her honor - "Derbyshire Way."

Here’s a sure new pilgrimage site for electronic music fans. Late great composer Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop will have a street named after her in her hometown of Coventry, as reported by the BBC.
