"The legislature that cannot say no is not a legislature at all. A legislature which simply receives executive proposals, approves them without scrutiny, and goes home has not fulfilled its constitutional mandate."

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has declared that no amount of insecurity or political pressure will prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from retaining power in 2027, insisting that โ€œthere is no vacancy in A*o Rock.โ€

Okpebholo made the statement on Tuesday during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the forthcoming local government elections in Edo South Senatorial District.

The governor alleged that some opposition elements were sponsoring insecurity across the country in a bid to distract the Tinubu administration and undermine its achievements. According to him, recent cases of kidnapping, banditry, and other security challenges are being exploited for political purposes.

โ€œThere is no vacancy in A*o Rock. They can even kidnap all of us, yes, there is no vacancy in A*o Rock,โ€ Okpebholo said while addressing party supporters.

The governor argued that criminal activities would not help anyone secure political office, adding that power cannot be attained through fear, violence, or kidnapping. He urged those behind recent abductions across the country to release their victims and allow the government to focus on governance and development.

Okpebholo further praised President Tinubuโ€™s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy has increased resources available for infrastructure and development projects across states.

The governor reaffirmed Edo Stateโ€™s support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, maintaining that the APC remains committed to delivering victory for the president and advancing his Renewed Hope Agenda.

No fewer than 50 elderly residents of Magamin Diddi village in the Magami/Faru ward of Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been abducted by suspected bandits while on a reconciliation mission aimed at restoring peace in their community.

The victims were reportedly kidnapped by a notorious bandit leader identified as Jammo, who operates from the Muntsira Forest axis of Maradun LGA. The elders had reportedly agreed to meet with the gang leader after he allegedly indicated a willingness to embrace peace and end hostilities in the area.

Confirming the incident, Maradun Local Government Chairman, Bello Dosara, described the development as unfortunate, stressing that the reconciliation effort was carried out without the approval of either the local or state government. According to him, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has consistently rejected negotiations and peace deals with armed bandits.

Dosara said the government had been providing security escorts to residents to enable them access markets and carry out essential activities despite the security challenges in the area. He expressed surprise that community members chose to engage directly with the same criminal group responsible for disrupting economic activities in the region.

The council chairman disclosed that 11 of the abducted elders had since been released, while 39 others remain in captivity. According to him, those freed were sent back to relay the demands of the kidnappers to the community.

Also speaking on the incident, Bello Husseini, the councillor representing Magami/Faru ward, said tensions between local vigilante groups and the bandits had escalated in recent months following a series of deadly confrontations. He explained that despite the government's opposition to reconciliation efforts, community leaders decided to constitute a 50-member delegation to meet the bandit leader after he reportedly sought peace.

According to Husseini, the peace mission turned into a trap as the bandit kingpin allegedly abducted the entire delegation upon arrival. He further revealed that the gang leader is demanding N24 million and the return of three rifles allegedly seized from his group before the remaining captives can regain their freedom.

The councillor maintained that the incident vindicates the government's stance against negotiating with bandits, noting that criminal groups cannot be trusted to honour agreements. He appealed to security agencies to intensify operations in the Dajin Natsira forest and secure the release of those still being held.

The latest abduction highlights the persistent insecurity in parts of Zamfara State, where armed groups continue to carry out kidnappings, attacks and extortion despite ongoing military operations in the North-West region.

This video showing retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife in captivity was released by their abductors, with the kidnappers outlining conditions for the couple's freedom. The development has sparked renewed concern over insecurity and kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria.

The former Director of Defence Information and his wife were abducted along the Marabar Musawaโ€“Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State while travelling to Katsina. Reports indicate that gunmen ambushed their vehicle, opening fire before taking the retired army officer and his wife away. Their driver reportedly sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.

In the video, the visibly distressed couple appealed to authorities and community leaders to intervene and secure their release. According to the footage, the kidnappers are demanding the release of three of their members identified as Sani, Aminu, and Nasiru, who they claim are currently in custody. The abductors are also demanding the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.

Speaking in the video, Mrs. Rabe appealed to the Katsina State Government and leaders across affected local government areas to help facilitate compliance with the demands in order to save their lives. Major General Rabe also made a brief appeal, urging efforts toward peace and dialogue.

Reports further suggest that a notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Muhammadu, has established contact with the family of the retired general and communicated the kidnappers' conditions. Sources close to the family said the abductors are seeking what amounts to a prisoner exchange involving their detained members.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Katsina State Government nor security agencies had issued an official statement regarding the video or the demands made by the kidnappers.

Former presidential aide and Nigeria's ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has disagreed with comments made by former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, regarding the ability of security agencies to track and apprehend terrorists and bandits operating across the country.

Buratai had recently argued that if security agencies could track ordinary citizens and social media influencers through their online activities, they should also be capable of locating bandits who frequently post videos and display their operations on social media. He made the remarks during an interview while discussing Nigeria's worsening security situation.

Reacting to the statement, Omokri said tracking terrorists is far more complicated than it appears, stressing that even some of the world's most advanced intelligence agencies have struggled to locate high-profile terrorist figures.

According to Omokri, the challenges involved in counterterrorism operations extend beyond simply tracing online activity. He cited the example of former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who evaded capture for nearly a decade despite extensive efforts by the United States and its allies. Omokri argued that terrorist networks often employ sophisticated tactics, operate in difficult terrains, and rely on support structures that make them difficult to detect and neutralize.

The former presidential aide also acknowledged recent successes recorded by Nigerian security forces against terrorists and bandits, maintaining that security operations require intelligence gathering, surveillance, and careful planning rather than assumptions that online visibility automatically translates into easy arrest.

Buratai's comments came amid renewed public concern over insecurity following recent attacks and abductions in parts of the country.
