Thank you for posting, Iyabo Boyd!
Film world: please don't hire more white filmmakers to tell the stories of this historic (and gruesome and heartbreaking) time.
This pandemic, this protest movement, and the murders of #GeorgeFloyd #BreonnaTaylor and #AhmaudArbery deserve to be represented by filmmakers who, when supported, will contribute to the dismantling of our country's systems of oppression, including those in the film world.
I don't want to hear ANY excuses about not knowing any filmmakers of color to hire. DO YOUR RESEARCH. There are literally thousands of talented and experienced black and other POC filmmakers to hire.
Some places to direct your research: Brown Girls Doc Mafia, Firelight Media, A-Doc, BDC-Black Documentary Collective, Nia Tero, New Negress Film Society, BlackStar Film Festival, Youth FX, the Black TV & Film Collective, BLACK FILM SPACE, Ghetto Film School, I'm African. I'm a Woman. I Make Films., Mezcla Media Collective, Undocumented Filmmakers Collective, and more (please post any others I'm forgetting in the comments and I'll add).
And please don't reach out only when you need to hit a diversity quota or check a box. Be a true ally and build organic, mutually beneficial relationships for the betterment of your creative work and our world overall. See BGDM's faq on HOW TO BE A BETTER ALLY: https://www.browngirlsdocmafia.com/faq
For now though, please hire black, indigenous, and other POC filmmakers for this, and heck- ALL your projects going forward. Our voices hold multitudes.
Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) advocates for women and non-binary people of color in the documentary industry.
