You should always allow your music to breathe.

An in your face sound can tire the listener's ears so you should have some space in between your sections of the arrangement.

This gives the listener a rest and creates great dynamics in your tracks.

Automation will give your music a bit of life by changing parameters in your track.

Whether it's opening up a synth or adding a low pass to a lead, you can make it so that there is a more movement in your track amongst the individual instruments.

This will keep your music interesting and the listener engaged.

Oh and if you're not able to automate a specific parameter in your VST for whatever reason, tie that parameter to your mod wheel and you should be able to automate from there.
