Each episode follows a central character as they share their culture and history, and open up about their efforts to challenge and break down stereotypes, address ongoing discrimination, hate crimes, and terrorism. The music community is collectively mourning the death of Ras G, a pillar of the LA underground hip hop and experimental scene. Ras' fundraiser memorial is this Sunday 8/4 @ Lodge Room Highland Park. Ras was a huge part of the pioneering music collective Low End Theory. Calico featured the movement as part of the larger musical tapestry in our electronic music series #AfterTheRaves. The protests in Puerto Rico are nothing short of extraordinary, but also long overdue. Women and the LGBTQ+ community have long been neglected and deserve the same opportunities and rights as their Catholic male counterparts, including Gov. Ricardo Rosselló who represents all this is still ideologically toxic on the island. Last year, Calico produced a PBS doc on Carmen Yulín, mayor of San Juan, and in it we deconstruct her own struggle against the status quo and transformation from traditional and conservative views towards a more liberal stance of social equity. We also talk about machismo for all you Latinx folks who know exactly what this is and how it affects everyday life! Vamos.
