RIP Hero. 🇺🇸❤️

On this date in 2010, Staff Sgt. Robert Miller was posthumously awarded the #MedalOfHonor from President Barack Obama for his actions during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

On January 25, 2008 Sergeant Miller was leading a team of Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition soldiers during a combat reconnaissance patrol in Kunar Province near the Pakistan border. Insurgents hiding in a structure attacked Miller's team. A teammate called for close-air support to drop ordnance on the insurgent position, disrupting their attack. When the combined patrol moved toward the structure to check for any remaining enemy threats, insurgents again fired using heavy weapons.
Miller's team captain was seriously wounded within the first minutes of the attack. While his commander was moved to safety, Miller returned fire. At great personal risk to himself, Miller remained at the front of the patrol and continued to lay down suppressive fire on multiple insurgent positions, allowing his wounded commander to be pulled out of the line of fire, ultimately saving his life. Miller's personal courage under intense enemy fire enabled the entire patrol to gain cover and return fire. Even while injured by direct enemy small-arms and machine gun fire, Miller continued to employ his M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and grenades to suppress enemy fire and protect his teammates.

Today is the 10th anniversary of Extortion 17. Please take a moment to remember the Fallen Heroes from this Mission.
RIP ALL.
On 6 August 2011, a U.S. CH-47D Chinook military helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 was shot down while transporting a “QRF” Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak province, southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan. The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board – 23 US Navy SEALs, 2 United States Air Force Pararescue, 1 United States Air Force Combat Control Team member, one pilot and two crewmen of the United States Army Reserve, one pilot and one crewman of the United States Army National Guard, seven members of the Afghan National Security Forces, and one Afghan interpreter, as well as a U.S. military working dog.At 31 U.S. military personnel killed, the shoot down of Extortion 17 represents the greatest single-incident loss of U.S. lives in Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan, surpassing the sixteen lost in the downing of Turbine 33, a 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) MH-47, during Operation Red Wings on 28 June 2005.

Above the Best coproducer Erik Sabiston will be live at the top of the hour to answer your questions!

On Tuesday Dec 29th, I will have my friend Erik Sabiston on Tall Tales with Taco and this is one show you don’t want to miss! I have never met a more humble man who has the energy of Universes colliding. God places you in front of your fellow man for a reason and in this case, it was putting the two of us together to help others. Amazing how one little spark could lead to help form one of the greatest Veteran charities out there called RTAG. They provide scholarships for flight training and mechanics, help build transition programs throughout the Airline industry to address the shortage of pilots and mech’s and they do ALL of this as Charity work. It is a full time second job for them and one based on the tenants of taking care of our fellow Vets.
He is an accomplished author (Dustoff 73), musician and Army Dust off pilot. Please join me at 7pm CST Dec 29th for Erik Sabiston call sign “Sabby”

It’s a Wonderful Life turns 74 this year and watching it is a Christmas tradition in my home. The film hearkens to a bygone era where characters from the Greatest Generation grow up before our eyes. REAL HEROES!

We are very proud of RTAGers CW5 Joseph Rosamond and his copilot CW2 Brady Hlebain, (both from SkyWest Airlines) as well as their crew, SGT Cameron Powell and SGT George Esquivel, the CH-47 heroes of the Mammoth Lake Rescue!

They were accompanied by an equally heroic UH-60 crew made up of CW5 Goding, CW2 Hernandez and WOC Xiong, who is a crew chief awaiting orders to Army Flight School!

All sectors of the aviation industry may be suffering now, but when it returns RTAGers like these will be ready no matter which field they pursue. We already know they can stay cool under pressure.

ICARUS Devices

ATB co-producer, Army veteran and dual rated commercial pilot Erik Sabiston’s new company wants to save lives by making better airplane and helicopter pilots. Accidents like the one the Kobe Bryant perished in would never have happened had all pilots trained with an Icarus Device. Please check out this life saving invention and share it with your friends!

ICARUS Devices allow you to mimic dangerous weather conditions like this in your aircraft. 90% of spatial disorientation accidents are fatal. Airplane and helicopter pilots can now train to overcome the "startle effect" of degraded visual conditions without a sim.

The Hornets Nest

The Spartans do not ask how many the enemies are but where they are. Plutarch

Tye Reedy
To my brothers of Cougar Company - No Slack Battalion. It’s been 8 years since Operation Strong Eagle III. Below are the words I spoke to you in Afghanistan after our brothers fell. They still hold true today. We will see them again at the final manifest. I love you all.
"In the ancient Spartan Army, the phalanx was a formation for their infantry units who stood side by side, with their shields in one hand to protect themselves and more importantly their brothers. In the other hand, they dealt out death to their enemies with their swords. The shield and the sword is not what made them great. They marched forward as one entity, crushing opponents, wave after wave. This was a very simple form of warfare, but their constant drill and superb discipline made their phalanx much more cohesive and effective. When a member of the front line of the phalanx was wounded and could no longer fight, another Spartan warrior immediately took his place. Their strength came from always fighting together, and never allowing the phalanx to become weak at any point. The men of Cougar Company are no different than the Spartan warriors of the past. When our brothers fell, you immediately stood in their place within our phalanx. The loss of our brothers: SSG Bryan Burgess, SSG Frank Adamski, SPC Dustin Feldhaus, and PVT Jeremy Faulkner would have folded lesser units. You did not. You did the opposite and did exactly what our brothers would have wanted you to do: You stepped up and filled the gap so that we could march forward and achieve victory. Their sacrifice is painful, and will never be forgotten. But I promise you...I promise brothers...we all will stand next to them once again."
- Cougar 6

I just watched this film tonight, and it real, raw, difficult and emotional at times, because it is just that - real. Documentary film-making at it's best as far as I'm concerned.
CW4 Daniel Flores (Ret.), I really enjoyed watching your film, Above the Best. I enjoy military documentaries. I was with my first spouse during his years with the I SAY until his retirement. My eldest son also retired from the USAF as a jet mechanic. My father served in the USN just after the Second World War. So, you can see why I have such a great interest. I will refer my friends to your documentary. Thanks so much for your service! Judith Farrow
Finally watched it. Many memories, wasn’t there until the year after.
Above the Best Film Screening in Tallahassee for the FSU cinematique presentation in celebration of Veterans Day 7-9 pm https://g.co/kgs/sZkazP
Above the Best is one of the best documentary films I’ve seen this year that gives veterans a voice to express their experience in the afghan war. Director David Salzberg creatively supported the veteran’s expression using live combat footage and compelling stock footage. I felt that the live visual presentation showed how dangerous the afghan terrain was on land and air. One of the strongest points in the documentary that I felt is how the director captured the physiological mindset of each soldier and what they were going through in the moment. I recommend above the best as a great watch!
Really excited for the screening of this documentary in Tallahassee, FL at Florida State's Torchlight Cinematheque Presentation in Honor of Veterans Day on November 7th! Terry Best, Daniel Flores, Kristi Hickey, and David Salzberg are all going to be guest speakers, seems like a super cool event! Here's the flyer if anyone's in the area.
