Homelessness ain’t just the person on the sidewalk.
It’s the brother sleeping on your couch trying to chase a dream.

It’s the actor, the musician, the painter, the dancer — anybody just trying to survive another week.

Joseph Bradford III of breaks it all the way down on Vision for a Change, reminding us that homelessness shows up in more places — and more people — than we want to admit. And if we’re serious about solutions, we have to see all of them.

This conversation is necessary.

“SHOES OFF IN MY TENT.”
You read that right.
But before you laugh or judge read this….

Joseph Bradford III told me this story on Vision for a Change and it hit different. He was out feeding the community when a man asked him:

“Can you take your shoes off before you come in my tent?”

Not because he was being difficult.
Not because he didn’t understand his reality.
But because he wanted to keep his space clean.
His home — temporary as it may be — still deserved respect.

And that’s the whole point.

People living on the streets are still people. They care about cleanliness, dignity, boundaries, pride, humanity — the same way we all do. If we can’t start there, none of the policy conversations matter.

That’s what is doing here in Los Angeles.
Meeting people at eye level. Restoring humanity first. Treating folks with the kind of respect that makes real solutions possible.

As Thanksgiving approaches, with millions gathering around warm tables… remember the folks who don’t have one — but still deserve to be seen, honored, and treated like whole human beings.

This holiday season, lead with dignity.
Lead with compassion.
Lead with truth.

“Homelessness isn’t their problem — it’s our problem.”

This week on Vision for A Change, I sit down with Joseph Bradford III, the founder of B A R E Truth , a South LA–based nonprofit offering wellness services and independent-living support to underserved individuals and families. Joseph’s work is rooted in lived experience: he became homeless at seven years old, spent time in shelters with his mother and siblings, and learned early how easily good people can fall on hard times.

That perspective gives him a clarity California desperately needs.

We pour billions into homelessness. We pass new laws. We build new programs. Yet the crisis persists— because we keep missing the most important step: understanding the people we claim we want to help.

Joseph breaks down a truth most policymakers avoid:
We create rules around unhoused people without ever talking to them. We design solutions for them without ever building solutions with them. And when you don’t see people as human first, you create systems guaranteed to fail.

He challenges us to return to what actually works: relationship, listening, presence, and dignity.
Because real change doesn’t begin with politics or money. It begins with humanity.

If you care about homelessness, public safety, or the future of California, this conversation will shift something in you.

I am so incredibly humbled and honored to be featured in the East Bay Express by writer D’Andre Ball. The East Bay is where I was born and raised — it’s where my story began, and where my purpose was shaped.

While still an undergraduate, the Shawn Carter Foundation supported my education and empowered me to reimagine what was possible. That experience changed the course of my life. Today, my work lives at the intersection of art, culture, and service — using that foundation to fuel everything I create, from storytelling that uplifts our communities to initiatives that expand access and opportunity.

My work in film and media, as well as my service in government, all stem from the same commitment: elevate voices, shift the narrative, and build pathways to opportunity. The Shawn Carter Foundation is not just part of my story — it’s the core of the work they continue to do every day, and I’m proud to keep supporting that mission as an alumnus.

You can’t win Black men with hashtags and op-eds — and I’ll tell you why👇🏾

In Episode 2 of Vision for a Change, I sit down with South Carolina Rep. Hamilton Grant to talk about what it really takes to keep Black men in the Democratic Party — not think pieces, not panels, but presence.

He’s out here meeting brothers in barbershops, cigar lounges, and real spaces where authentic conversations happen.
And if you know me, you know I like me a good cigar (and a lil whiskey on the side 🥃).

Because you can’t connect with people from a press release. You gotta pull up.

Real talk. Real leadership. Real connection.

🚨 The South Got Something to Say.

In this week’s episode of the Vision for a Change Podcast, I sit down with South Carolina State Rep. — a rising force in Southern politics and one of the sharpest minds shaping the next generation of leadership.

We’re talking about real talk in the Palmetto State — not just politicians flying in to shake hands and take photos, but leaders who actually understand the people, the pain, and the power of South Carolina’s Black communities.

As Rep. Grant reminds us: “You gotta learn the people. We’re not a monolith — we’re diverse, we’re grounded, and we’ve got something to say.”

Because when South Carolina speaks in 2028… the whole country better listen.
