Tipping culture is starting to feel a bit out of control 😭
I went into a restaurant today and instead of just a normal tip line on the receipt, they had a whole breakdown posted on the wall showing how a $150 meal is “really” $193 once you factor in the expected tip.
Expected.
Not “tips appreciated,” not “thank you for supporting staff”… just straight up *expected*.
And the sign literally walks you through the math like it’s a lesson:
“Here’s what your total SHOULD be…”
Seeing it on a wall instead of quietly on a receipt changes the whole vibe. At that point it doesn’t feel optional anymore—it feels like pressure with instructions attached.
Before anyone jumps in:
YES, servers deserve fair pay.
YES, restaurant staff work hard.
That’s not the issue.
The issue is customers are getting hit from every direction too. Menu prices are already high, drinks are expensive, random service fees show up out of nowhere, and now there are signs basically telling you how much extra you’re supposed to leave on top.
And honestly?
If a place needs a framed step-by-step explanation just to justify why dinner “should” be almost $200… maybe the system itself is the problem.
Because the more aggressive tipping gets, the less it feels like appreciation—and the more it feels like an obligation.
Be real—when you see stuff like that, does it actually make you want to tip more… or does it do the exact opposite? 🤔
