In an exclusive interview, I spent several hours with Brad Johns as he explained the water issues affecting Kings County and the challenges facing Hanford. He described in detail how the city continues to rely on lower quality water from deeper wells instead of the clean natural supply that comes from the mountains. Brad stated that he has already shared his concerns and solutions with the city, Mayor Travis, county supervisors, and several city council members. Despite this, he has not received any response from local leaders.
During our discussion, Brad walked me through the conditions on the ground. He showed me the wells that the city depends on, the areas where subsidence is occurring, and the locations where he has been developing water banking strategies. He explained each step of the process and showed how the current system affects the quality of water that residents receive. He also pointed out how certain organizations are able to access clean mountain water while local families continue to rely on water that does not match the same standard. Based on what he presented, Kings County is not receiving its fair share of clean water.
Brad also addressed claims that water from this region is being wasted or allowed to flow into the ocean. From what he showed me, those claims do not match the reality on the ground. He believes some groups may be shaping a narrative to influence control over local water rights rather than acknowledging what is actually happening.
It was clear throughout our time together that Brad cares deeply about this community. He made it clear that his work is not tied to money or personal benefit. His goal is to help residents of Hanford and the surrounding areas gain access to clean, reliable water that compares to the natural supply coming from the mountains.
A full video news report featuring what he showed me, including the wells, subsidence sites, water banking areas, and his explanations, will be released in the coming days.
