State of Defacto | a Sevada film | Synopsis

When single mother Anahid Kalentz complains about the horrors of war, it falls on deaf ears, as her son and only family, David, has made the decision behind her back to enlist in what will be known as the "Four Day War" of 2016. It doesn't take long for David to realize his robust decision to fight for Armenia against the intruding forces of Azerbaijan, was probably the most life-changing experience he'll have.

Having been convinced by the peer pressure of his teenaged friends, that war was a necessary evil to fight for God and Country, soon reveals the true face of what nationalistic hatred looks like. Beginning on April 1st, this war was as foolish as most wars are, as the cease-fire of 1994 ends and quickly turns deadly.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, the battlefield takes on a new spin due to the advancements in personal electronic devices, as David brings his smartphone to the front lines with Facetime capabilities. It quickly becomes every mother's nightmare when she sees a first-hand, live-feed of the consequences.

When single mother Anahid Kalentz complains about the horrors of war, it falls on deaf ears, as her son and only family, David, has made the decision behind her back to enlist in what will be known as the "Four Day War" of 2016.

Vehicular | a Sevada film | Synopsis

Vehicular is an edge-of-your-seat, satirical thriller that will keep audiences guessing. The script hits all its dramatic beats at the right moments, subverting expectations and pushing its protagonist to his limits. The story is deeply reflective of the disillusionment felt by everyday people in this current economic and political climate, yet it provides sheer escapism. It poses the question, "What would you do if everything fell apart around you, and the restrictions of logic were extinguished? How far would you go to take revenge on those who wronged you?" Mann begins the story as an average Joe who has been walked upon, only to retaliate violently and transition into a twisted avenger of sorts. In many ways the story is like a superhero origin film for fans of psychological thrillers.

Our aim is to create a film that places us in the mindset of a regular guy turned mad man and take audiences on a roller-coaster ride. They will emerge from theaters feeling guilty that they enjoyed watching someone's violent descent into chaos. But most importantly, they will feel empathy for the protagonist and feel moved by his ultimate self-redemption. Despite all its carnage, Vehicular is primarily a performance-driven film. It will require an actor of immense range, personality and magnetism to carry viewers through to its violent conclusion with a sense of connection.

We envision the film as a visual tour de force. The fact that most of the story is set in a vehicle is an interesting challenge for maintaining a cinematic sensibility. Yet much like Buried, I aim to utilize special vehicle rigs and visual effects to make the interior of Mann's car its own special world. The story is constantly moving, and so too will the camera, not in a disorientating fashion, but via uniquely subjective and immersive techniques. We want to put the audience behind the wheel with Mann.

Vehicular is a film with great potential. Much like Falling Down, Fight Club and Collateral, it is a darkly-comedic, character-driven, action-thriller that appeals to an increasingly cynical generation.

Burning The Man | a Sevada film | Synopsis

What starts out as three separate stories, eventually falls into two and then, finally, one very disturbing tale of survival.

First, there’s Mr. Theodore, an artist who’s at the top of his game. He’s the best there is at his particular brand of art, and he knows it. He takes great pride in his work and each piece of art gets the same care and attention to detail as the last.

Second, there are four of the riches men in the world. But it seems these billionaires have become bored and have lost the thrill of spending money. Without the anxiety of buyer’s remorse, they need to find a pastime that will bring a certain nervous excitement to their next purchase.

Third, there’s Razzle, a regular at the Burning Man festival held in the California desert. It’s his unique business that puts his brother, Mr. Theodore, to work and allows the wealthy to invest in a rare opportunity to go hunting. The trophy in this case is a Tsantsa, more commonly known as a shrunken human head.

Then there’s Page, who by no choice of her own, is thrust into the middle of these three stories melding into one. She is next in line to be one of Mr. Theodore’s finest creations. The Tsantsa ordered by none other than her own husband. By sheer will, and a little luck on her side, she breaks free of her prison only to be “rescued” by our four billionaires. Will she make it out alive?

With time running out, it's his final wish to see his wife once more. Unfortunately, this harrowing trip to the South Pacific turns disastrous when his plane goes down into the South China Sea.

Fortunately, he finds himself washed ashore of a small tropical island which is owned by the reclusive Dr. Moreau, head of the controversial Moreau Pharmaceutical company. Here, Pendrick will have direct access to experimental drugs which are promised to cure his cancer. But much to his dismay, Pendrick learns of the disturbing animal experiments being performed on the island...experiments that cross breed animals into hybrid human-like creatures. Can Pendrick trust that the medical treatments he's receiving are what they were promised, or will his disease change him into a creature only the likes a mad scientist could conceive?

Dark Rapture | a Sevada film | Synopsis

When a mysterious alarm is heard over the entire planet, the people of earth begin to panic when they realize that the noise isn't man made. When it's discovered that the terrible sound is heard from Washington to London, from Korea to the South Pole, and from Australia to Greenland, we find our planet's population in an instant state of chaos. It isn't long before earth realizes that something strange is afoot.

When otherworldly craft begin to emerge from our oceans and suddenly overtake the female population, it's all a dorm full of female students can do to keep themselves hidden. In a unique spin on the "Diary of Anne Frank", our young ladies find themselves with far more dangerous things to deal with than the inconveniences of staying put. Replacing Nazi's with otherworldly beings, this tale strikes a chord with anyone who fears being caught by the evil lurking in the dark.

* It’s the fear of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” meets Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” with strong female characters in their harrowing final fight for existence.

The Tree of Death | a Sevada film | Mythology

Tree worship (dendrolatry) refers to the tendency of many societies throughout history to worship or otherwise mythologize trees. Trees have played an important role in many of the world's mythologies and religions, and have been given deep and sacred meanings throughout the ages. Human beings, observing the growth and death of trees, the elasticity of their branches, the sensitivity and the annual decay and revival of their foliage, see them as powerful symbols of growth, decay and resurrection. The most ancient cross-cultural symbolic representation of the universe's construction is the world tree.

The image of the Tree of life is also a favourite in many mythologies. Various forms of trees of life also appear in folklore, culture and fiction, often relating to immortality or fertility. These often hold cultural and religious significance to the peoples for whom they appear. For them, it may also strongly be connected with the motif of the world tree.

Other examples of trees featured in mythology are the Banyan and the Peepal (Ficus religiosa) trees in Hinduism, and the modern tradition of the Christmas Tree in Germanic mythology, the Tree of Knowledge of Judaism and Christianity, and the Bodhi tree in Buddhism. In folk religion and folklore, trees are often said to be the homes of tree spirits. Historical Druidism as well as Germanic paganism appear to have involved cultic practice in sacred groves, especially the oak. The term druid itself possibly derives from the Celtic word for oak.

Trees are a necessary attribute of the archetypical locus amoenus in all cultures. Already the Egyptian Book of the Dead mentions sycomores as part of the scenery where the soul of the deceased finds blissful repose. The evidence for tree-worship is almost unmanageably large, and since comparative studies do not as yet permit a concise and conclusive synopsis of the subject, this article will confine itself to some of the more prominent characteristics.

David of Sasun | a Sevada film | Mythology

The Daredevils of Sasun® (Armenian: Sasna Tsrer) is a Armenian heroic epic poem in four cycles (parts) and is about the struggle of four generations of Sasun's warriors against the Arab rule in the 8th to 10th centuries.

It is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Armenian folklore. This recital of the legendary deeds of four generations of strongmen in a warrior community in the Armenian highlands is in the tradition of heroic folktales that dramatize the story of a whole nation and voice its deepest sentiments and aspirations, but unlike such well-known epics as the Iliad and the Odyssey (Greek), Epic of Gilgamesh (Sumerian), Beowulf (English), Chanson de Roland (French), Cantar de Mio Cid (Spanish) and others one might mention, it has survived solely by word of mouth, transmitted from one generation to another by village bards. The literary merits of the Sasun saga surpass its value as a historical or linguistic document. The performance of The Daredevils of Sasun® is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage representative list in 2012.

Sasna in Armenian refers to Sasun - a region and a city located in Western Armenia, in the rugged mountain country southwest of Lake Van - in what is currently Batman Province, eastern Turkey. Tsour means crazy, mad, strongman, daredevil.
The most accurate and complete title of this epic is The Daredevils of Sasun®. It has however been published under various titles such as "David of Sasun", "Sanasar and Balthazar", "David of Sasun or Meher's Door" and many others. All these titles correspond with four cycles of the epic.

The written literature of Armenia goes back to fifth century of our era, its Golden Age, when the Bible was translated into the vernacular from the original Greek and Syriac texts, Plato and Aristotle were studied in Armenian schools, and many original works of great interest to the modern specialist were produced by native historians, philosophers and poets. The oral literature is older that the written, and folk poetry had flourished in Armenia for the past two thousand years, not to go farther back. Movses Khorenatsi (Moses of Khoren) tells us in his classic "History of Armenia" (fifth century) that Armenians still loved the pagan "songs" the minstrels sang on festive occasions, and he quotes from them. Only these fragments of pagan "songs" have survived to this day. Songs celebrating memorable events have retained their hold on the popular imagination, and one might say that Armenians are preeminently a nation made by the book and the folk song, the word, written and spoken or sung. But the spoken word is more perishable than the written, and little has survived.

The story of Sasun - the greatest achievement of the oral literature - was "discovered" in 1873 by a bishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Garegin Servantstian, who had exceptionally close contacts with the peasantry in the more remote inaccessible parts of Western Armenia, where life had not changed much for thousand years or so. He says:

- For three years I tried to find somebody who knew the entire story, but nobody seemed to know all of it until I met Gurbo from a village on the Moush plain. I learned that his master had two pupils who also knew the tale by heart, singing verses in it, although Gurbo himself had not recited it for so long that he had forgotten a good deal of it. Nevertheless, I kept him with me for three days, I begged him, cajoled him, honored him, rewarded him, and when he felt better and was in the proper mood, he recited the tale for me in his own village dialect, and I wrote it all down in his own words.

The tale told by Gurbo was published in Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1874 under the title David of Sasun or Meherr's Door. The bishop wrote in the introduction: The life of David and his exploits belong in the Middle Ages... The entire story is a record of courage, of domestic virtue, of piety, and of simple, open-hearted relations with his beloved woman as well as with his enemies. Despite its irregularities and anachronisms it has some fine stylistic qualities and narrative devices in it... The publication of this tale would be of interest to the understanding reader, but I suppose there will also be those who will express their contempt for it and abuse both the story and my own person. These readers will not understand it. But it does not matter. I shall consider myself encouraged if I find twenty sympathetic readers".

Though the language abounds in poetic pictures, the physical sensory details are often missing. This is because an oral tale is necessarily different from that of a written story. The reciter would get on with his action and act out most parts of the story to hold interest of his audience, plot is the main thing, and the reciter suits the words of action. It's written in a beautifully controlled language and hyperbole is a characteristic device of this epic style.

In 1881 The Daredevils of Sasun® was translated into Russian. Later the tale was translated into the languages of all fifteen republics of the Soviet Union. Next the text was translated into French and Chinese. Other variants of this folk epic have been published since 1874, and there are some fifty of them altogether. If bishop Garen Servantstian saved the Armenian epic from oblivion, sixty years later Dr. Manouk Abeghian of the Armenian Academy of Sciences rendered an almost equally valuable service with his co-workers by collecting nearly all these variants in three scholarly volumes published by the State Publishing House in Yerevan, Armenia in 1936, 1944 (part l)and 1951 (part ll), under the general title The Daredevils of Sasun® (Sasna Dzrer). All three volumes contain over 2,500 pages of text. In 1939 a collated text weaving most of the important episodes together was published for popular reading under the title "David of Sasun". As village texts are in various dialects, which presents many difficulties to the modern reader, the story was reworded and a fairly uniform style comprehensible to Eastern Armenian dialects was adopted. From 1939 until 1966 all translations were made from this popularized text. In 1966 Leon Zaven Surmelian, Armenian-American author, translated the epic into English from its original village stories under the name The Daredevils of Sasun®.
