Phi Alpha Theta is a chapter of the History Honor Society, which was originally organized at the University of Arkansas in 1917. Since its inception, Phi Alpha Theta has grown to over 800 chapters in fifty states, as well as Puerto Rico, Canada and the Philippine Islands. To date it is the largest (in numbers and chapters) of the accredited honor societies and boasts more than 150,000 initiates in
ternationally. The main objective of Phi Alpha Theta is to promote the study of history and to recognize superior achievement in the field. The Eta-Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at California State University, Los Angeles, was founded in 1960 by Professor Arthur Smith, and has held a distinguished reputation since. It is consistently strong in the regional paper competitions, and is a frequent recipient of the Chapter Awards in its division. Eta Xi is a proud sponsor of Perspectives: A Journal of Historical Inquiry. This peer-reviewed academic journal has served the History Department at California State University, Los Angeles since 1973. Published in print and electronically every year, it is our mission to provide undergraduate and graduate students at California State University, Los Angeles an accessible forum for their historical research projects. Perspectives is the product of History 497, an upper-division course on editing and publishing taught by Dr. Brite Pfleger each winter.
