This is one of those moments that reminds me why I love raising my kids in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
My friends in California got this message from their school. California already provides free breakfast and lunch to every public-school student, regardless of family income. Yet we’ve somehow reached the point where schools need official policies telling students they cannot leave class to pick up DoorDash and Uber Eats.
It’s not really about the food. It’s about the culture we’re creating around kids: instant gratification, constant convenience, phones, delivery apps, and the expectation that whatever you want should arrive exactly when you want it — even during the school day.
One thing I’ve come to appreciate so much about Dutch schools is how much more simple and grounded childhood can still feel here. My kids go to school with a sandwich and some fruit. There isn’t a cafeteria full of choices, and certainly no expectation that a delivery driver is bringing them restaurant food in the middle of math class. 😂
Kids don’t need every adult environment redesigned around their wants. Sometimes “this is what we’re having, this is when we’re having it, and now get back to class” is actually a very healthy lesson.
California, I love you… but the longer I live in the Netherlands, the more I appreciate the Dutch approach to certain things. 🇺🇸🇳🇱
