Join Omega Sci-Fi Project for an out-of-this-world evening benefitting the sci-fi writers of the future!
Omega Sci-Fi Project uplifts students’ voices at a time when creative expression is under attack. In celebration of 10 years of Omega Sci-Fi Project, this event brings supporters, students, teachers and celebrity guests together to ensure that L.A.’s only free high school sci-fi writing program will live on for decades to come.
Omega Sci-Fi Project has taught thousands of teens to love writing and think big about our future, examining important social and environmental justice issues through the lens of sci-fi. And L.A. Parent is a proud co-sponsor of this amazing project. We publish students’ stories in our magazine and on laparent.com. Together, we can continue to empower high school students to imagine a better tomorrow—a cause that’s bigger than the cosmos.
Join us for a spectacular night of curated sci-fi readings by celebrity guests. All benefit proceeds will support Omega Sci-Fi Project’s mission of teaching young writers across Los Angeles the power of sci-fi. With an additional donation, you can witness this transformative impact firsthand by sponsoring a front-row seat for a student or educator.

✨ Shout-out to the middles—the connectors, the steady hands, the quietly remarkable ones 🪄
Today we’re spotlighting the magic of middle children, inspired by Lori Orlinsky, author of the children’s book “Being Middle.” Lori wrote an insightful article, “Why Middle Children Deserve the Spotlight: Finding the Magic in the Middle,” for L.A. Parent. (Link in bio and below)
📌 Here’s what stuck with us:
Middle children often feel like they’re in between — neither the “first” nor the “baby” of the family.
But that “in between” space? It’s a superpower. Empathetic. Adaptable. Independent.
As parents and allies, the article reminds us we can shift the narrative: • Listen deeply. • Carve out one-on-one time. • Celebrate their unique wins.
So today: If you’re a middle child, you’re seen. If you’re raising one, you’ve got the tools. If you’ve got a sibling in that sweet spot, send them love, affirm their place.

Remember the day you came home from the hospital with your first child? Do you remember holding your baby and feeling this incredible sense of love and joy, but also a touch of sheer panic?
We know! We’ve been there. At L.A. Parent, we’re living it day by day-- just like you. We drive carpools, attend parent/teacher conferences, plan birthday parties, stress about the right schools and camps, and wonder if we are doing enough — or too much?
Being a parent is most definitely the most challenging job, but it is also the most fun and rewarding job we could possibly imagine. At L.A. Parent, we truly feel honored to share this incredible journey with our 170,000 readers, visitors and followers each month.
Our mission is simple: We want to bring our families the best parenting resources in Los Angeles. And we never forget about fun! Our extensive calendar of events is the go-to source of information for fun things to do with your kids each month. We provide you the most in depth list of things to do in L.A. with kids.
L.A. Parent began with a vision: To discover Los Angeles through the eyes of a child. The first issue of the magazine, originally called “Pony Ride,” was published in 1980. For more than 35 years, we have been a companion and a guide for families throughout L.A., and we’re looking forward to continuing that tradition for generations to come.
Our Magazine
Our monthly magazine is distributed at more than 2,000 locations throughout the city and provides award-winning articles on a wide range of parenting topics, including education, health and wellness, family travel, and extensive coverage of organizations and people making our community a better place for families. Each issue also features a comprehensive calendar of family-friendly events and things to do in L.A. with kids.
