Before reading “Your Fabulous Skin,” I wanted to make sure my students had a personal connection to the topic. 📖✨ So before we opened the book, we took a closer look at our hands and talked about the different shades and tones of our skin. 🖐️🤎 I was also very intentional about using words like “same,” “similar,” and “different” during our conversation. Since we have a math assessment coming up on sorting by attributes and describing groups, I’m always looking for authentic opportunities to reinforce that vocabulary throughout our day! 🧠🔢 It’s a simple conversation, but it allowed us to build background knowledge, make connections to the story, and practice important academic vocabulary all at the same time. 💕

We finally introduced F***y the Frog! 🐸💚 The students who were in my class last year remembered Fernando, so they had been begging me to open this “house” to see who was inside! 😂 F***y is a large puppet from the Frogstreet curriculum. She’s used for all kinds of lessons, but one of my favorite ways to use her is to reinforce classroom expectations like how we sit during whole-group lessons. 🐸✨ Disclaimer: I don’t require my students to sit criss-cross applesauce all the time! It’s just the position I start each lesson with. If students want to shift into another position, that’s totally fine as long as they aren’t blocking the view of the friends around them. I love using F***y because she gives me a fun way to reinforce expectations without constantly having to be the one reminding students! 🥰🐸

This version of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” by The Learning Station cracks me up, and the kids love it just as much! 😂🎶 Since we’re learning about body parts and spatial relationships this week, this song is the perfect way to practice both skills while getting up and moving! I love when a silly song can turn into meaningful learning. 🥰 The kids are practicing body part vocabulary, following directions, and thinking about where their body parts are in relation to one another, all while having a blast!

One of my favorite things to do during the first few days of school is read fun books that help my students feel excited and ready for this new chapter in their lives! 📖✨ One of our first reads this year was “The Pigeon Has to Go to School!” by Mo Willems. 🐦🏫 The simple illustrations and relatable story make it such a great book for the beginning of the school year. My students can immediately connect with Pigeon’s feelings about starting school, which gives us a great opportunity to talk about their own thoughts and feelings, too! 💕 What are some of your favorite books to read during the first week of school? 📚

I can’t tell you the number of times we sang and danced along to this song in the past few weeks!🐒 Such a great way to work on the concept of zero!0️⃣

This book is nice and simple for kids to understand, and has beautiful and bright illustrations!📖 I like how it has a mix of insects and non-insects and at the very end, it has a page that breaks down different features of each bug from the book (I.e. number of legs, if it can fly, etc)🦋

This book is a must-read when it comes to teaching about caterpillars and butterflies!📖 The story is about a caterpillar who doesn’t know about the process of turning into a butterfly.🐛 He becomes very impatient and comes out early just to find that he hasn’t fully transformed yet!😅 This story came in handy when my class was observing our live caterpillars breaking through their chrysalises.. one of ours was impatient, tried to push out too early, and didn’t make it!🙃
