I’m honored to be the featured speaker for USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s free July 14 webinar, “Making the Past Present: Strategies for Reporting on History.”

RSVP here:
https://centerforhealthjournalism.org/our-work/webinars/making-past-present-strategies-reporting-history

My support for USC’s Center for Health Journalism and its mission runs deep. The Center has meant a great deal to me and my work. I received a fellowship from USC supporting my reporting on child well-being, and that support helped deepen the research that became part of my book, I Am Nobody’s Slave: How Uncovering My Family’s History Set Me Free.

In this webinar, I’ll be sharing the reporting tips, research strategies and hard-won lessons I used to bring buried history into the present. We’ll talk about archival research, genealogy, genetic testing, finding sources, getting reluctant people to talk, and how journalists and storytellers can use history not as background, but as the engine of powerful present-day reporting.

The webinar is free, but you do need to RSVP. I hope you’ll join us and share this with journalists, writers, students, researchers, historians, genealogists, educators and anyone interested in telling deeper stories about the past and why it still matters.

Happy fourth!!

Looking forward to joining USC’s Center for Health Journalism as the featured guest for a public webinar on reporting on history on JULY 14th.

We’ll talk about how to conduct archival research, use genetic testing to identify potential sources, follow leads, and turn those leads into hard-won interviews.

We’ll also get into one of the classic challenges of journalism: how to get reluctant sources to talk about difficult subjects when they finally answer the door.

The webinar is open to the public. You can sign up here:

Page 1 of 2 We, the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation Board of Directors and Emmett Till Legacy Family Members are sending our sincere condolences and prayers to the family of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. We are deeply saddened by the passing of civil rights giant Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Who led us "from the streets to the suites", demanding truth, justice, human, civil and economic rights and so much more.

Reverend Jackson was a towering figure in the modern Civil Rights Movement and a steadfast truth teller who consistently lifted the name of as a pivotal, galvanizing moment in America’s conscience and in the ongoing fight for racial justice.

We are forever grateful. See the following statement from our co-founders and executive director Deborah Watts c/o Charles Reese and our board of directors.
