Why Do You Miss Someone Who Hurt You?

Someone who made your life miserable. A person who flooded your mind with painful memories that kept you awake most nights.

Why do you still miss them?

The truth is, you do because they made you do it.
And here is the logic.

They were not cruel to you all the time.

So part of you still remembers the good moments with them.
The soft version of them.
The late-night conversations.

Sometimes they were sweet.
Warm.
Emotionally available.

And your brain became conditioned to wait for that version of them to come back.

That’s why no-contact feels unbearable sometimes.

You don’t wake up missing the pain.

You wake up missing the moments that temporarily interrupted the pain.

But the anxiety was real too.
The confusion was real.
The emotional exhaustion was real.

You don’t miss the hurt.
You miss the moments the hurt stopped.

You miss them because that tiny good moment they gave you felt like a pause.
And pauses feel like hope.

When love comes and goes, your brain stops tracking the pain.
It starts chasing the relief.

That one soft glance after three cold days.
That apology that finally sounded real.
That version of them you kept waiting to come back.

You don’t miss who they were most of the time.

You miss the small moments that made you believe things could still get better.

And here is the hard part:

Inconsistent love is harder to leave than consistent cruelty.

Because cruelty gives you nothing to hold onto.

But small warmth?
That small warmth feels like proof.

Proof it wasn’t all bad.
Proof they can change.
Proof you didn’t waste your heart.

So you hold onto five good minutes and call it a reason to stay.

But missing someone doesn’t mean they belong in your life.

It only means they once belonged in your heart.

And hearts take time to learn the difference between a home and a habit.

You don’t need them to be a monster to let go.

You only need to realize the warmth was real — but never enough.

And maybe that’s the hardest truth of all:

Missing someone is not always a sign you should go back.

Sometimes it’s just a sign your nervous system is still healing from the tiny version of them that occasionally made you feel loved.

Because love is not supposed to feel confusing, painful, or unsafe.

Now, if this video explained a feeling you’ve never been able to put into words, like this video and follow Echo And Veil for more emotionally intelligent truths about love, heartbreak, healing, and human behavior.
