Not a speech therapist —— just a mom fighting for her child’s speech, and this is our story…
My child has Level 3 autism with GDD. She is a gestalt language processor and uses echolalia.
I try to take advantage of her natural ability to imitate language by teaching her phrases as if she’s talking to me. When she copies the phrase, I respond as if she initiated the conversation. This helps create a meaningful back-and-forth interaction for her.
Every morning, I tell her, “Good morning, Nanay (Mom).” Once she copies me, I respond, “Oh, good morning, Arya!” and give her a kiss so she can begin to understand and recognize that pattern.
How many times do I do this??? A lot!!!
My hope is that, over time, these repeated, meaningful interactions will help guide her toward using language more independently.
I’m not a speech therapist. I’m just her mom, learning, advocating, and doing everything I can to help her find her voice. 💙
