Are You Ready to Pay $6 to Watch Star Trek?

The only question I have regarding the newly announced Star Trek series is if it will beat GOT as the most pirated show in the universe. Based on the decision to put the show behind the CBS All Access pay-wall, I'd say it has a pretty good chance. I'm happy to see the franchise return to TV, but I'm not sure the economics are going to work for a show that has historically cost well over 1-million bucks per episode. [ 69 more words. ]

Cord Cutting is a Fad (Says Cable Industry)

The cable industry is attempting to convince themselves that "fat bundle" cable packages will come back into fashion once the millennials have kids. Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night and not address your issues... Here's some more info from TechDirt.

Netflix VR – A Virtual Living Room in Your Living Room. Is This Dumb?

I can't decide if this concept of an Oculus VR interface for Netflix is the best thing ever of just...dumb. It kind of reminds me of the "people want to shop via avatar" interfaces that were popular concepts back in the mid-nineties. I'm guessing this type of design will go out of favor relatively quickly, once people discover a design and control language that works for VR. [ 57 more words. ]

Stacking Rights Make Hulu Still Sort of Suck, But That Might Be Changing

Looks like the TV industry is finally coming around to letting cord cutters view the current season beyond the limit of 5 episodes now in place across much of the industry (this is also the last hurdle for Hulu getting rid of ALL the suck now that they are almost ad free). That practice was fine for "catch-up tv", but pushes those looking to binge the current season over to Genesis or other illegal, but awesome sources of programming. Oh yea, here's Jeff Bewkes talking about this and other stuff.

Do Hardware Requirements Make Vidity DOA?

Maybe I'm being pissy because I just bought a 4k TV and receiver a few weeks ago, but it seems like Vidity is DOA. But you say, Vidity solves the problem of media ownership! You can have a hard drive or two around the house and hook those up to compatible hardware! You don't need an internet connection! The reason this is going to fall flat can be summed up like this: I'm not interested in owning media. [ 221 more words. ]

Comcast Data Caps – Cord Cutter Killer (Told Ya)

Pretty sure we were just talking about this last week...Comcast is setting data caps at 300 GB per month. That's just in the range where it will kill cord cutting by making the fines not worth the trouble, but will leave the vast majority of their customers under the cap, so the FCC won't ding them. Two Things That Might Kill Cord Cutting

I love that I've cut the cord, so don't get mad at me for what I'm about to write. Cord cutting makes sense for the home consumer because it's much cheaper than cable, but there are a couple of scenarios where that cost savings disappears: 1. Data caps. Some consumers in the US already live in non-competitive cable markets where data caps are a fact of life. [ 248 more words. ]

The Blu-Ray Disc Association is ready to license the 4k spec (at least I'm pretty sure that's what the article said, I didn't read the whole thing because I was busy watching 4k video on YouTube and Netflix and Amazon and Vudu). Also, Fox did a deal with Western Digital to distribute 4k movies on hard drives (over the last 10 years there have been several attempts to do similar things with DVD and Blu-ray quality video, and those all went really, really well).

Sony Vue TL:DR – Stop paying Comcast for Useless Channels, Pay Sony Instead

I just spent some time experiencing Sony Vue (Sony’s cable like service for the PS4). It’s a Sony product alright and it brings nothing new to the table. Here are the highlights: This isn’t a cord-cutter product, it’s a straight up cable substitute and costs about the same as a basic cable package (starting at $50 vs. $20 for SlingTV). It’s loaded with filler channels and the lack of an on-demand library with the subscription means Vue is a pretty dumb choice (features wise) if you are thinking of jumping over from cable.
