For Sydney Raley, it started as a normal shift at McDonald's.
Then she noticed something was wrong.
The 15-year-old employee was working the drive-thru in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, when she handed an order to a customer and saw the woman desperately struggling to breathe. A chicken nugget had become lodged in her throat, and her young daughter sat beside her in panic.
Sydney didn't freeze.
She didn't wait for someone else to help.
Instead, she climbed through the drive-thru window and rushed to the vehicle. As she approached, she instructed the daughter to call 911 while she focused on helping the choking woman.
Years earlier, Sydney had taken a Red Cross babysitting course where she learned the Heimlich maneuver. In that moment, she relied on that training.
Working alongside a bystander who also stopped to help, Sydney performed the life-saving technique until the food was finally dislodged and the woman could breathe again.
What could have become a tragedy ended in relief because a teenager was prepared to act when seconds mattered.
The rescue quickly drew national attention, and responding officers later recognized Sydney for her bravery. Her family, coworkers, and community praised her calm thinking under pressure.
Sydney later said the experience showed her that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.
One moment she was serving meals through a drive-thru window.
The next, she was saving someone's life.
