Beware: “In general, when a (travel agency) goes into bankruptcy, basically it’s the vultures picking over the bones,” said Ira Rheingold, the executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. “The last people who will get a piece of those bones are going to be the unsecured creditors: the consumers.”

Update on Avanti Destinations Predatory and Unconscionable Business Practice of Holding onto Travel Deposits for Travel this Summer During COVID 19: Avanti is now offering for me to travel during the COVID19 abroad plus the options mentioned above - another Hobsonian choice. They have reduced the penalties for cancelling if I do not want to travel abroad during this massive and deadly health crisis but they are still substantial. Avanti Destinations care more about lining their pockets with money than the safety of it travelers. Really shocking.
Avanti Destinations is engaging in a predatory and unconscionable business practice by refusing to refund my $650 deposit for travel this summer in the middle of world wide pandemic. Under its policies, a traveler can either forego it or they coercively turn it into a future travel credit which must be be booked by August 2020. This is predatory and unconscionable business practice in the middle of a devastating, unsafe for travel pandemic. Scheduling travel dates, airlines and group tours when it is entirely unknown how afar into the future it will be safe to travel in the midst of this evolving, dangerous pandemic, is simply unfair and wrong. Very disappointing. I would not advising using Avanti Destinations and any travel agent using Avanti (including Andavo Travel and Camelot Journeys) in the future unless at a bare minimum, they refund the travel deposits. Camelot Journeys has also been unresponsive in advocating for travelers and in advocating for refunding travel deposits for international travel during a world-wide pandemic. Instead, I was told for weeks to wait and that Avanti would likely cancel — the clear implication being I would receive my deposit back. If that was not the case, Camelot Journeys should have upfront and clear about it. When Avanti decided to engage in the above-described practice, Camelot Journeys did not offer to help or urge this booking company to do the right thing for its customers. Very, very disappointing experience all around. If I receive my refund, I will update and edit this post
Norwegian Cruise Line acknowledges ‘substantial doubt’ about its survival. Norwegian Cruise Line, one of the world’s largest cruise companies, said on Tuesday that there was “substantial doubt” about its ability to survive the coronavirus pandemic. Norwegian acknowledged the dire situation in a securities filing announcing that it was seeking $650 million in new financing. The global shutdown of the cruise industry has strained the finances of all three major cruise companies — Norwegian and its two main rivals, Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean — forcing them to borrow money at high interest rates. As the coronavirus continues to spread, Norwegian said in the filing, it is “expected to continue to adversely impact our results, operations, outlook, plans, goals, growth, reputation, cash flows, liquidity, demand for voyages and share price.”
My latest cover story is live! The relationship between travel suppliers and travel advisors is one of the most foundational in the travel industry and it, like many things, will change as we enter our “new normal.” Loved chatting with some of the industry’s most honest thinkers for this piece.
Skift Take: Carnival's recent loans gave it about six months of breathing room to survive without almost no bookings. It needs to act decisively if it wants to restore public confidence in time to avoid an even larger crisis. — Sean O'Neill
