I rarely post things, here on FB, but this week there are 2 posts. I felt that I had to say something about my friend and partner in crime. Alan Singer is one amazing human being. This is worth the read.

Here’s a little story about Alan and Ricky, who’s friendship could be referred to as…..COMPLICATED. We are, at times, the best of friends. At other times, we are the worst of enemies. We don’t agree on much, but sometimes we do end up liking the same bands and music…..but only sometimes. At other times the music that Alan loves makes me want to vomit, and the music that I love usually makes Alan want to stomp on my head, kick me in the balls and then shoot me, after which I think he would like to dice up my lifeless body and throw it in the river. Yes, it’s true…Alan has “ANGER MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS!!!! My wife seems to think that I do too.. THAT IS SOME F**KIN’ BU****IT. I DO NOT HAVE ANGER MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS!!!!!!! So, moving on… I met Alan in 1963. That was year my family moved from a 2 bedroom apartment in Crenshaw to our new house, in Mar Vista. Alan was the first kid that I met at my new elementary school, who didn’t immediately make fun of my left hand, which was covered with warts. From then on, Alan became best friends. Our friendship wasn’t always easy. Unlike me, he was always quite organized, and a bit of a clean freak. I, on the other hand was, and still am, a disorganized and disheveled slob. Alan seemed pretty wound up at times, which wasn’t always easy for me. I am convinced that by 3 years old he had probably ground his teeth to nubs. Conversely the shrinks always diagnosed me with the O.C.D….You know, "One Chill Dude.” As we grew older, and in spite of our vast differences we spent just about every day hanging out together. We had bands together, we did our drugs together and in spite of our quirks, we were always there for one another, in a crunch. Brothers till the end.Over the many years since West L.A. Studios were born, there have been many great people who have worked there, but Alan was there from the very beginning and still there at the end.I could never pay Alan what I thought he deserved, not only because we couldn’t afford it, but more importantly, because what he did was invaluable. You couldn’t put a price on it. At the studios he fixed things, he installed everything that you could imagine. He kept things in order and made sure that everything was working correctly. He was the glue that kept the studios from falling apart. Whether it was a broken vending machine, a blown amplifier, a shelf that needed to be installed, he was the one who monitored and fixed those things. He installed our built in amenities like the electric hand dryers in the bathrooms, video cams for all of the rooms, our tv monitors, and our security equipment. He wired up our electronic cash drawers, installed fuses in every one of our speakers cabs, and he did so much more. Because he has a huge heart, he would do the same things for our customers, usually for no cost or at the worst just a few shekels (look it up). It was often that you would find Alan with a screwdriver in hand, helping a customer, perhaps replacing a pickup, fixing a loose guitar jack or simply teaching a young musician how to string his guitar. His kindness ran deep. Beyond that, there was Alan's deep knowledge about so many things, of which the least of which was not rock and roll music. You could always find him sharing stories about musicians, their music, different bands, concerts he had attended, and so many other things. Sometimes the customer would spend more time, in the lobby, chatting with Alan then they spent in their room rehearsing. The fact is, if Alan wasn’t there, putting his all into keeping the studio going, sharing his stories and sage wisdom, West LA Studios would not have been what it was. He kept me honest and called me out when he thought I needed it. Turns out I usually did need it. He made me better at what I did. Alan and I had a ying and yang thing going. If I was the heart of West L.A. Studios then Alan was the soul…and visa versa. West L.A. Studios definitely would not have been the same without Alan. I doubt we would’ve lasted this long if he wasn’t in the mix. He defined West L.A. Studios as much as I did…maybe more. I love him like a brother……Thank you Alan!

Hi all, it’s your old pals, Alan Singer and Ricky Eckstein. A number of weeks back, due to the effects of Covid 19, we made the very difficult decision to temporarily close the doors at West L.A. Studios. This decision was not due to a mandated government directive, but rather, it was made solely by our concern for you, our beloved customers, and for the safety of our workers. Since then, it has become more and more apparent that there would be no way for us to safely reopen our doors in the near term. So, after a pretty good 32 year run, we have made the very difficult decision to cease operations at our current location. We very much look forward to the opportunity of reopening West L.A. Studios at a new, and even better location, when the time comes that there is an effective vaccine or a very good treatment for this very aggressive flu. We anticipate that this will be sometime in the first half of 2021, but we hope that it will be sooner. Please stay tuned, and feel free to email us at [email protected] or call us at the number you’ve reached us at since the day we opened our doors, back in 1988…………..(310) 478-7917.

It took us a few weeks to completely move out of the building. Besides it being physical draining, it was an extremely sad and emotional task to complete. However, on the last day, when I picked up the very last item to be removed from the building, I looked around, and it hit me that 2033 Pontius Ave was just another old beat up building. No more no less. There was nothing magical about that old building or the beat up parking lot. There was no magic in searching for street parking or getting a parking ticket once you found a space. Rather, the magic was the music that you all played, that rang out through the halls, the musicians who collaborated to create such amazing grooves and melodys, the close friendships which were born there, the laughs that were shared there, and most of all, the amazing love that was dispersed freely and generously every day since the day we opened our doors.

BUT WAIT!!! I forgot to mention the pretzels! How about those pretzels? 😥❤️♥️💕💔

AS MUCH AS IT PAINS US, WE HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE A BREAK THIS WEEK, (3/16/2020 - 3/22/2020), DUE TO THE CONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. THIS WILL BE A 1ST, IN OUR 32 YEARS IN BUSINESS. WE HAVE MADE THIS DECISION BECAUSE WE DO NOT WISH TO PUT OUR AMAZING CLIENTS AND STAFF AT RISK. ADDITIONALLY, WE FEEL DEEPLY THAT WE HAVE A SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION RATHER THEN TO BE PART OF THE PROBLEM. THIS HIATUS COULD EXTEND BEYOND THIS WEEK BUT THAT WILL BE A DECISION WHICH WILL BE MADE, AS TIME GOES ON AND THE SITUATION BECOMES MORE CLEAR. LOVE TO ALL OF YOU, AND SEE YOU IN A WEEK OR TWO, (FINGERS CROSSED).

What’s up with the restaurant servers asking how your food is tasting? Wow, that is a personal question, isn’t it? When they ask me that question, I just want to answer with, “What the f**k?” I mean, when did it become out of style for a restaurant server to ask, “Is everything ok?” When...

We get such kind and thoughtful messages from so many people. I wish we could respond to each one. Unless we are missing something there is no way to respond, individually. So, thanks for the kind words to all. Much appreciated!

It was a true pleasure to have these guys back at West L.A. Studios! Not only are they the nicest guys in the world, they just happen to be rock and roll royalty. These are the guys that I listened to, growing up. It's such a treat to get to meet your musical heroes, every now and then.

Holy Smokes..... What a treat it was to have Mindi Abair and her band, The Boneshakers, rehearse at our humble digs, this afternoon. They rocked the house, here at West L.A. Studios. I bought a copy of her new album, "The East West Sessions",. I suggest you all do the same.

All of us here, at West L.A. Studios are saddened to hear of the passing of Shiloh who was the heart and soul of Alley Rehearsal Studios. Long before I opened up our little studio complex, I rehearsed at the Alley with The Alpha Band and a few other groups. The place felt like home and exuded love and kindness. Shiloh was a huge part of that. All of us here, tip our hat to all of you at the Alley, and send our sincerest condolences to all the folks that she touched. .

I am really proud of my uber talented niece, Kelsey Carter who is a volunteer for this amazing group of kids and their charity. She also performs at their events. These kids and adults have made a ton of money benefitting pediatric cancer research. They rehearsed here at West L.A. Studios, for their sold out benefit concert, this coming Sunday, where they will be performing with the band, "One Republic" . It was humbling and a super special honor to have them here, preparing for the event. Special folks. Please click the link to see what these awesome kids do. DONATE!

A nice article, in the L.A. Times, about our friend, Terrace Martin. In the article, they mention that he is at "West L.A. Sound Studios". It would be nice if a major newspaper sweated the details, and got the name right, but we still love Terrace. "West L.A. Sound Studios?" AKA West L.A. Studios. This guy is a super talent, and we are so happy to see him here, on a regular basis. Unfortunately the L.A. Times reporter used ALTERNATIVE FACTS, and mentioned us with an alternative name.

I got a very sweet email, from one of our customers, today. Getting this email, seeing and hearing the video they made, is what is so rewarding about our jobs, at West L.A. Studios. This is what we strive for, giving people a place where they can let their talent flourish. Here is the email that we received:
Hello, I think you're name was Rick.
Not sure though, the thing is, I rented a studio on February 2016 and you were absolutely nice with me by not charging extra for shooting while recording. I explained you it wasn't for commercial purposes and since we weren't using extra lights or extra electricity, you didn't charge extra, which I'm absolutely grateful for. So I wanted to share with you the video that came out of the recording and the shooting there. Hopefully you like it, hug!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77GPC3UeTrk

This Is Our Story, & we are sticking by it.

Hi, my name is Ricky Eckstein, and I am the founder and owner of this wonderful place, called West L.A. Studios. I was 33 years old, back in 1988, when we first opened our doors. Back then I didn’t have any idea, of how amazing and fulfilling, this journey would be. Back then, I never dreamed that I would encounter so many incredible and talented musicians, many of who would become part of the West L.A. Studios family and ultimately become very close friends. Back then, it really never, never occurred to me that one day I would look in the mirror and see a bald old guy looking back it me! Sadly, and most shocking, is that back then I never could have possibly imagined the state that our country would be in, 30 years later, with a president who stokes the flames of hate, intolerance, bigotry and ignorance. And, who exhibits ugliness, heartlessness and a disregard for common decency, on a daily basis. But, as they say, it is what it is. With that said, we at West L.A. Studios aspire to make our rehearsal studios an oasis, of sorts......... A place where, when you walk through our doors, you enter a world of music, musicians, smiles, kindness, laughter, diversity and respect for all, leaving the ugliness of these times, we live in, outside, in the cold.

Now that who know who we are, what we believe in and what our mission is, please take a look at our website for more information on what we offer. Pricing, equipment, pictures, directions, etc. www.westlastudios.com
