Follow the rules.
Earn their place on the stage.

But on graduation day, they want to wear a small feather or cultural symbol that represents their heritage, family, and traditions.

The school says:
"Everyone should look the same."

The family says:
"This is part of who we are."

For many Native communities, cultural symbols are more than decorations.
They carry history.
Identity.
Respect for ancestors.
And pride in a culture that has survived for generations.

Some people believe graduation rules should be the same for everyone.

Others believe students should be allowed to honor their culture on one of the most important days of their lives.

Imagine being told to leave a part of your identity behind on a day you've worked so hard to reach.
