WHAT BANNER ARE YOU FIGHTING UNDER?
Exodus 17 begins with Israel facing an enemy. Amalek comes to fight, Joshua goes into the valley, and Moses goes to the top of the hill.
The battle is real. The enemy is real. The exhaustion is real.
But after the victory, Moses builds an altar and names it:
“And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:”
— Exodus 17:15 KJV
Jehovah-nissi means, “The LORD is my banner.”
In ancient battle, a banner identified whose army the soldiers belonged to and gave them a place to rally around. After Israel’s victory, Moses did not honor Joshua or himself. He gave the glory to God.
Our victory does not come from us.
Our strength does not come from us.
We belong to the LORD.
That still matters today.
When life becomes a battle, we may be tempted to trust our ability, money, reputation, plans, or strength. But every human banner eventually falls.
God does not.
You may be facing a battle that feels bigger than you. But Exodus 17 reminds us that the battle was never meant to prove how strong Israel was. It was meant to reveal how faithful God is.
You do not have to face tomorrow under the banner of your own strength. Stand beneath the name of the God who has already proven Himself faithful.
