Q***r Kentucky doesn’t have a paywall. No subscription fees. No “premium” content.

That’s on purpose.

Some folks can’t safely use their card for LGBTQ+ content. Others just can’t afford another subscription — especially in this economy.

We keep our reporting free because q***r information should be accessible to everyone.

We’re working toward 200 total Bedfellows so we can stay free for all.

✍️ In the mid-1980s, the shape of q***r activism in the state was rapidly changing. The onset of the AIDS epidemic, as well as changing ideas around visibility, mobilized organizers to focus on solidifying people power among q***r Kentuckians. An emergent activist group called the Greater Louisville Human Rights Coalition (GLHRC) followed this call to action in Louisville by pursuing anti-discrimination protections for q***r people. Their aim was the endorsement of the Louisville-Jefferson County Human Relations Commission, which they won in 1986 through documenting discrimination in the city and building coalitional support from civil rights leaders, such as Dr. Lyman T. Johnson.

Q***r Kentuckians deserve harm-reduction reporting that’s honest, compassionate, and rooted in our community — not judgment or stereotypes.

One of our most-read stories this year was our collaboration with Uncloseted Media on the connection between q***r substance use and dating apps. It reached more than half a million people — many telling us it was the first time they’d seen their experiences covered with care instead of shame.

We want to do more of that work in 2026: more stories that help people feel seen, more coverage that connects folks to resources, and more reporting that treats harm reduction as care.

If you want to support more harm-reduction journalism in Kentucky, become a Bedfellow.

Help us reach 200 total and keep this coverage alive statewide.

There’s a walnut tree in the front yard of Sam Gleaves’s childhood home in southwest Virginia, and its roots stretch across every track on his latest album. "Honest", released in August 2024, is a ten-song record shaped by tenderness, grief, and Sam’s long journey toward writing love songs that feel like home—to him and to us.

From the first lyric, "Beautiful" is a love letter to his mother. “My first plane ride, Mom and I, Pacific bound,” Gleaves sings, recalling a trip to California as a teenager. In San Francisco, they saw two men holding hands. Sam, who wasn’t yet out, remembers his mom turning to him and saying, “Isn’t that just beautiful?” That moment became the seed for the album.
