Luol Deng: How He Became A Beacon of Success in South Sudan*
Many of us have been wondering how Lual Deng became so successful in his endeavor in South Sudan. Something that have left many pondering upon. To me there are three areas that are often missed and yet obvious. The three aspects we should examine close are economical/financial independence: commanding social influence and as a result political impact. A lesson that our community should borrow a page. Here is a snippet into his journey.
Luol Deng, a South Sudanese-British former professional basketball player, has made significant strides both on and off the basketball court. His journey from fleeing Sudan to being selected by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft with the seventh overall pick and then becoming a two-time NBA All-Star and a British citizen bears witness to his resilient spirit and persistence attitude.
*Financial Independence*
Deng has showcased his expansive business ventures and astute investment strategies, with a portfolio valued at an estimated $125 million. His real estate investment company, D3N9, has investments spanning across hotels, resorts, condos, and apartment buildings globally. This includes significant stakes in the Virgin Las Vegas resort and nearly 100 apartment units in Deng’s hometown of Baltimore. His profound business acumen and commitment to leveraging his wealth and network to build a diverse and impactful portfolio is a testament to his financial independence.
*Commanding Social Influence*
Beyond his playing career, Deng has dedicated himself to the development of basketball in South Sudan, serving as the president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation and taking on coaching roles. His efforts are beyond just promoting the sport but also building a legacy that leverages his experiences for the growth and empowerment of young athletes in Africa.
Deng’s transition from an NBA player to a mentor and leader in the basketball community showcases his commitment to making a lasting impact beyond the game of basketball. His investment and influence in fostering basketball development in Africa, particularly through NBA Africa, is exemplified by the launch of the first Jr. NBA league in South Sudan in early 2024. This project not only highlights his investment in the sport’s growth but also his commitment to using basketball as a tool for social and economic development.
*Political Impact*
Deng has been the president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation since 2019. He is an assistant coach for the South Sudan men’s national team and has previously served as its head coach. His father Aldo, a member of the Sudanese parliament, moved the family to Egypt to escape the Second Sudanese Civil War. In Egypt, they met former NBA center Manute Bol, another Dinka, who taught Deng’s older brother, Ajou Deng, how to play basketball and also mentored Luol.
Luol Deng’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and a vision for a better future. His success in the realms of finance, social influence, and politics has not only elevated his status but also brought hope and inspiration to the people of South Sudan. His story serves as a beacon of success, illuminating the path for future generations in South Sudan and beyond.
The challenge for us is, are there many of kind in our community and what are our role collectively to raise to the occasion? We as community need open this up with interoception and collective action. My humble opinion!
