MENDENHALL — A Simpson County deputy was shot in the foot during an active standoff Wednesday afternoon in Mendenhall, but is expected to be okay, according to Sheriff Paul Mullins.
“He did, but he’s fine,” Mullins told The People’s Paper MS.
Sheriff Mullins said deputies responded to a welfare concern on W.L. Blair Circle when they arrived at a residence with an open front door. As deputies approached, a suspect inside the home opened fire.
The deputy was struck in the foot during the exchange of gunfire. The injury was not life-threatening, and the deputy remained on scene following the incident.
Mullins said the suspect is believed to be inside the residence and continues to fire shots, prompting an ongoing law enforcement response.

MENDENHALL — A Simpson County deputy was struck by gunfire during an active standoff Wednesday afternoon after a suspect opened fire on law enforcement, according to Sheriff Paul Mullins.
Mullins confirmed deputies responded to a welfare concern on W.L. Blair Circle when they encountered an open front door. Once deputies approached, someone inside the residence began shooting.
The sheriff said a deputy was struck by two rounds; however, the bullets did not pe*****te the deputy’s protective vest, and the deputy was not injured and remains on scene. Mullins said his undersheriff is on the scene.
We are told the suspect continues to fire shots from inside the residence.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey’s SWAT teams have evacuated nearby residents as a precaution while the scene remains active and contained.
Law enforcement officials have not reported any additional injuries.
