Tonight, we’re putting the candidates in your hands.

Who are they? What do they stand for? And what do they want you to know before you head to the polls?

Tonight, The People’s Paper MS will publish our Meet the Candidates story, featuring the candidates and their responses to five questions designed to help you get to know them beyond their names on the ballot.

We’re starting with the candidates in alphabetical order tonight: Chris Dunn, Dianne McNair Gaddis, Melissa Sullivan and Craig Williams.

And beginning Monday, we’ll reverse the order and spotlight each candidate individually, giving everyone an opportunity to be heard and giving you more chances to learn before you vote.

When violence affects a community, people respond in different ways.

For Pat Holloway and Georgan Jackson, the response is prayer.

At Magee’s City Prayer Gathering, residents came together with heavy hearts and a shared concern for young people, families and the future of the community.

These women of faith say they will not grow weary.

They will keep praying.

UPDATE: Mendenhall Police Chief said Saturday that officers also conducted enforcement efforts throughout the city of Mendenhall and reported that everything went well.

“And, the tigers did what we always do. What we do? Beat them Trojans,” Walker jokingly said.

Update: Sheriff Mullins said a statement has been sent. As soon as it comes through, we will share it with you.

We Want to Tell the Good Stories About Local Law Enforcement. We Just Need Them to Talk to Us.

When local law enforcement officers work together to keep our community safe, we believe that deserves to be recognized.

That is why The People’s Paper MS reached out to local agencies following Friday’s Simpson County Super Bowl in Mendenhall.

We wanted to hear about the officers who helped provide security and highlight the cooperation that helped make the event a success.

Only one agency responded.

Magee Police Chief Denis J. Borges told us four Magee officers assisted with the event and that no incidents were reported.

We appreciate Chief Borges for taking the time to talk with us, and we appreciate the officers who showed up to help keep people safe.

But there is another part of this story our readers need to understand.

We often hear, “Why don’t y’all write more positive stories about law enforcement?”

The answer is simple:
We try.

MORE OFFICERS. MORE ENFORCEMENT. ONE GOAL: SAFER ROADS.

If you’re driving through Magee, you may notice more police officers on the streets.

The Magee Police Department is conducting an enforcement blitz focused on speeding, reckless driving, impaired driving, seat belt violations, distracted driving and other dangerous violations.

But Chief Denis J. Borges says this isn’t about writing as many tickets as possible.

It’s about keeping people safe and preventing a traffic violation from becoming a serious injury or even a death.

So before you hit the road, remember the basics:

*Slow down.
*Put the phone down.
*Buckle up.
*Don’t drive impaired.
