EXCELLENCE AND PERFECTION
Mufti Imamuddin Saeedi
A reflection on faith, responsibility, craftsmanship, and Ihsan
Islamic law gives great importance to excellence, craftsmanship, and the proper fulfilment of responsibilities. Through excellence in work, civilizations are built, nations rise, and human dignity is preserved. True faith cannot coexist with negligence, carelessness, or failure to perform one's duties properly. The more deeply faith is rooted in a believer's heart, the more clearly its effects appear in the quality of his work, the perfection of his craft, and the fulfilment of his responsibilities.
True faith is a complete system of moral and spiritual training. It teaches a believer to perform every task entrusted to him in the best possible manner. Islam encourages excellence not only in worship but also in all religious, professional, social, and worldly affairs. Perfection and quality are noble objectives intended by the Sacred Law through its commands and prohibitions.
A believer who understands this principle becomes motivated to carry out every responsibility entrusted to him by Allah in a way that benefits humanity, spreads goodness, and contributes to the building of a righteous civilization.
1 QUALITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN QUANTITY
The Noble Quran directs our attention to the quality of our deeds rather than merely their number. Allah created life and death as a test of human conduct and intention:
“That He may test you as to which of you is best in deeds.”
— The Noble Quran
Allah did not say, "which of you performs the most deeds," but rather, "which of you is best in deeds." This teaches that sincerity, care, correctness, and excellence are more valuable than quantity alone. A small deed performed properly and sincerely may be more beloved to Allah than many deeds performed carelessly.
2 IHSAN: LIVING WITH AWARENESS OF ALLAH
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the noble spiritual principle of Ihsan: living and acting with the awareness that Allah is always watching us. When the Prophet was asked about Ihsan, he said:
“It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.”
— The Hadith of Jibril
When a believer keeps this awareness alive in the heart, it naturally leads to excellence in worship, work, conduct, and the fulfilment of every duty. The believer does not work only to impress people or to avoid criticism. He works carefully because he knows that Allah sees the effort, intention, honesty, and quality behind every action.
The Prophet also taught that when a person perfects his Islam, every good deed may be multiplied from ten to seven hundred times. This shows that sincere faith increases both the spiritual quality and the reward of one's actions.
3 NEGLIGENCE IN WORSHIP LEADS TO NEGLIGENCE ELSEWHERE
The Prophet warned against carelessness in acts of worship because a person who fails to perfect the greatest responsibility may also become careless in other areas of life. He said:
“The worst thief among people is the one who steals from his prayer.”
— Prophetic teaching
The Companions asked how a person could steal from his prayer. The Prophet explained:
“He does not complete its bowing and prostration.”
— Prophetic explanation
This teaching makes it clear that haste, negligence, and incomplete effort have no place in the life of a sincere believer. Prayer trains the believer in concentration, discipline, humility, and completeness. These qualities should then appear in professional duties, family responsibilities, social dealings, and service to others.
4 EXCELLENCE IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE UNIVERSE
Perfection and excellence are not limited to human actions. They are visible throughout the universe. The harmony, beauty, precision, and balance found in creation demonstrate that excellence is a foundation upon which life stands.
“The workmanship of Allah, who perfected all things.”
— The Noble Quran
The scholars explained that Allah perfected, strengthened, and beautifully designed everything He created. The Quran further declares:
“He perfected everything that He created.”
— The Noble Quran
In another passage, Allah calls human beings to examine the heavens repeatedly and look for any defect or inconsistency:
“You will not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return your vision: do you see any breaks? Then return your vision again and again. Your vision will return to you humbled and exhausted.”
— The Noble Quran
The perfect order of creation is a sign of Allah's mercy towards humanity. Any serious imbalance in creation would produce hardship and disorder in human life. The precision of the universe therefore teaches people to adopt discipline, balance, responsibility, and excellence in their own actions.
5 A RELIGIOUS OBLIGATION AND A HUMAN NECESSITY
Excellence is both a religious obligation and a human necessity. The Prophet taught that Allah loves excellence in every lawful form of work. It is reported that he said:
“Indeed, Allah loves that when one of you performs a task, he perfects it.”
— A comprehensive principle of excellence
This teaching establishes a principle for every aspect of life. It is not limited to prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and other acts of worship. It also includes professional work, business, education, family responsibilities, social dealings, ethics, behaviour, and public service.
Excellence means performing a task in the best possible way, with precision, sincerity, responsibility, and care. It is not merely about finishing a task. It means refining it, correcting its shortcomings, and presenting it in its finest possible form.
6 EXCELLENCE IN EVERYDAY RESPONSIBILITIES
A teacher should teach with preparation and sincerity. A doctor should treat patients with care and responsibility. A worker should perform duties honestly. A businessperson should maintain fairness and transparency. Parents should fulfil the rights of their children, and children should honour their parents. Every person should strive to perform his or her responsibilities with integrity and excellence.
Excellence reflects sincerity of faith and embodies awareness of Allah in private and in public. Through excellence, trusts are fulfilled, rights are delivered properly, and responsibilities are completed without negligence.
Societies whose people perform their work with sincerity, discipline, and mastery are the societies most capable of leadership, development, and advancement. By contrast, weakness, laziness, negligence, dishonesty, and carelessness are among the major causes of decline and poor productivity.
7 TRUE SPIRITUALITY APPEARS IN THE QUALITY OF OUR WORK
For this reason, excellence is not optional. It is a religious duty and a human necessity in every time and every place. A believer should strive for excellence in worship, employment, education, relationships, public service, and all other responsibilities.
True Ihsan and genuine spirituality are not limited to words, appearances, or spiritual claims. Real Sufism and true spiritual excellence are reflected in sincerity, discipline, good character, responsibility, and the perfection of every lawful task.
When people adopt excellence in every aspect of life, they become builders rather than destroyers and sources of benefit rather than harm. They contribute to the advancement of their communities and fulfil the purpose for which Allah entrusted them with their abilities and responsibilities.
“May Allah grant us a correct understanding of these teachings and give us the ability to practise sincerity, excellence, and perfection in all our religious and worldly affairs. Ameen.”
