A Birthday Salutation to Amelia Earhart | From Leonardo da Vinci, on the Occasion of Her 128th Birthday

"Dearest Amelia,

On this day, when the heavens mark the birth of a most intrepid soul, I extend my deepest admiration across the centuries. You, who dared to pierce the clouds with courage as your compass, have fulfilled dreams I once drew in silence and shadow.

In your flight, I see the sketch become spirit, the concept become courage. Where I imagined wings, you wore them. Where I dreamt of rising aloft, you soared with purpose.

The sky, once a mystery, welcomed you as kin. And though time separates us, our hearts beat alike—with wonder, with will, and with an unyielding hunger to know what lies beyond the horizon.

Happy Birthday, brave flyer. The wind still remembers your name."

—Leonardo

In this inspiring episode of 45 Degrees, internationally acclaimed muralist Tim Nijenhuis joins us fresh from his latest creation on the Pueblo levee. Born in the Netherlands and now based in Hamilton, Ontario, Tim brings a rich legacy of creativity that spans generations—from fine art to music, filmmaking, set design, and more.

We trace his journey from Europe to North America and explore how his diverse experiences as a music teacher, filmmaker, and set designer inform his large-scale murals. Many of his works are shaped by deep community research and cultural listening. Tim also shares insights into the power of 3D illusions and how public art can spark thought and connection across neighborhoods.

His newest mural, located near the G.H. Nuckolls suspension bridge, features a striking 3D image of a boy fishing—a visual moment best experienced from the center of the bridge itself.

Tune in for a conversation that celebrates imagination, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of art—especially when painted at a 45-degree angle. LISTEN HERE: https://loom.ly/EZP1pcc

Tia Monson Brings Bright, Interactive Sidewalk Art to Civic Center Drive

Muralist Tia Monson, known for her 36 levee murals along the Arkansas River, is bringing her signature style to Civic Center Drive as part of a new streetscape program aimed at enhancing public space through storytelling and art. Monson has launched the first phase of her sidewalk mural project, which will stretch from the Marriott to the Headwaters Fountain. The project is one of six vibrant sidewalk installations she plans to complete this summer across Downtown Pueblo and the Bessemer neighborhood as part of a public art service initiative. In true Monson fashion, the designs are bright, playful, and meant to invite interaction. Her 410-foot mural on Northern Avenue features piano keys and hopscotch patterns for passersby to engage with. On Civic Center Drive, residents can expect similar touches of whimsy—flowers, butterflies, sunshine, and imaginative motifs that transform everyday concrete into something joyful.

“I just want to paint pretty things and jazz stuff up,” Monson said. “Painting things for Pueblo helps make it prettier.”

Monson said her goal is to complete the Civic Center Drive mural by the end of July 2025. Until then, keep an eye out for her brushstrokes in action—adding not just art, but legacy to the sidewalks of Pueblo.
