Writers Plan to Protest and Lobby at AWP Conference in D.C.

"It would be surprising for a group of writers who will be presumably talking of little else but Trump for four days to do so in the nation’s capitol to convene without taking some sort of action. So it’s reassuring that several groups and unofficial coalitions have stepped up to the task in several key ways."

Rookie NFL star is part of a book club with a bunch of older suburban women

"Typically, when New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell gets in a huddle, he’s surrounded by a bunch of strapping men who are about to take part in a violent and dangerous sport. Well, that’s when he’s in a huddle on a football field. Mitchell also, from time to time, huddles with a completely different crowd that reads and discusses literature."

A marathon reading of a literary masterpiece?! Epic.

On Thursday, November 17, the Portland Museum of Art will off a four-day, marathon-style reading of Herman Melville's masterpiece in the Bernard Osher Foundation Auditorium. The book will be read (and perhaps on some cases, performed!) aloud by curators, artists, fishermen and women, writers, students, business leaders, special guests, and more.

Everything from "Call me Ishmael" to the epilogue will happen on the stage at the museum. Drop in and out any time you like, or stay for the whole thing.

Elena Ferrante: Hiding in Plain Sight

“The labor of writing touches every point of the body. When the book is finished, it’s as if you had been rudely searched, and you desire only to regain integrity, to return to being the person you usually are, in occupations, in thoughts, in language, in relationships.”

New Ferrante!

“Frantumaglia: A Writer’s Journey” is a modest volume that has ended up playing an unexpectedly pivotal role in Ferrante’s career.

Deep Water: 'On Halloween' by Deborah Cummins - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

(Major props to the Portland Press Herald for the ongoing poetry series!)

"On the eve of All Hallows’ Eve, here’s a poem by poet and essayist Deborah Cummins, who splits her time between Portland and Deer Isle. The poem asks us to consider a thought – what do kids’ choices in Halloween costumes reveal about their future lives? This question, the poem shows us, has a deeper one buried within it, a question that any of us might consider: “What other selves have my costumes hidden?”"

10 Worldwide Rad Women Writers You Should Know

"The first known author was an ancient Sumerian priestess named Enheduanna. The first novel was written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting at the Imperial Court in Japan. Women wrote plays in ancient Greece, poems in ancient Persia. Fast forward some centuries, and five of the world’s top ten bestselling authors are women. Women from all over the world have been creating, influencing, and contributing to literature since its inception. Yet ..."

The Frankenstein Anthology

Call for submissions!

"Conceived in honor of Frankenstein's 200th Anniversary in 2018, The Frankenstein Anthology is a special publication celebrating Mary Shelley's haunting tale and its lingering influence on women writers, particularly those writing in the genres of science fiction, speculative fiction, and horror.

Created by Jacqueline Dorsey, a current student of Rosemont College's Graduate Publishing Program, The Frankenstein Anthology is a single, limited-time anthology that will feature creative work by women, about or inspired by Mary Shelley's iconic tale. All proceeds from the finished book will go toward an organization benefiting women writers.

The anthology is accepting submissions of short fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry until January 2, 2017. We will also be accepting linear and graphic art submissions though February 2017."

Road to Rio is paved with poetry for runner Alexi Pappas

An oldie, but a goodie.

"In poetry, “there’s such an economy of words. I love having absolute freedom within boundaries. And in running, similarly, there are limitations. You might have a certain lane you have to stay in or a certain number of laps. But within those boundaries, there’s so much room for creativity and personality.”"

What the List of Most Banned Books Says About Our Society's Fears

"For as long as humans have printed books, censors have argued over their content and tried to limit some books’ distribution. But the reasons for challenging literature change over time, and as Banned Book Week begins on Sept. 25, it’s clear that public discomfort with particular ideas has evolved rapidly even in the last 20 years."

Poet Claudia Rankine says of her MacArthur, 'the prize is being given to the subject' of race in America

"One of the things I think the culture needs is an actual location where writers and artists and thinkers can come together and put pressure on the language that makes apparent white supremacy and white dominance. I think a lot of us are working separately on these subjects, but it would be nice to have a Racial Imaginary Institute that really has as its goal the dismantling of white supremacy. That each of us can go at it inside of our fields. If you’re a writer, you have the benefit of talking to other artists who are interested in the subject. What are we missing? What isn’t getting said? What are the narratives of white greatness that disallow other things to be brought to the surface? I’m very excited about the creation of the institute, the making of the space, the notion that culturally we’ll know where to go to have these discussions, to actively look at the absences and the erasures around the construction of race, especially the construction of whiteness in America."

Poet Claudia Rankine was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship grant for her work that engages with contemporary American culture, particularly issues of race. Her most recent book, 2014’s “Citizen,” racked up stacks of awards for its searing take on the personal and political, including the death of Tr...

Happy birthday to the ever brilliant, always romantic F. Scott Fitzgerald!

"...The son of a would-be furniture manufacturer who never quite made it big in business, Fitzgerald grew up feeling like a "poor boy in a rich town," in spite of his middle-class upbringing. This impression was only strengthened when he attended Princeton, paid for by an aunt, where he was enthralled by the leisure class, tried out and was cut from the football team, and fell in love with a beautiful young socialite who would marry a wealthy business associate of her father's. By the time Fitzgerald dropped out of college and entered the Army — wearing a Brooks Brothers-tailored uniform — it was little wonder he called the autobiographical novel he was writing The Romantic Egotist."

Why Poetry Is The Best Medium For Kids Who Want To Change The World

"Both Smith and Diggs are quick to praise poetry as an effective medium for kids whose voices need to be heard. “What writing a poem really does ― and what figuring how to perform effectively really does ― is forces people to listen to you,” Diggs said. “It frames your thoughts in such a way that grabs people’s attentions and forces them to hear the things that you’re actually saying.”"
