It may be 2 hours past our bedtime, but this is going to be one of our first nighttime sky events we will see since moving to the country - AND WE CANT WAIT! Unfortunately the early reports of it being coupled with the Northern Lights doesn’t appear to have panned out.

Hopefully the new Siri AI (which I’m testing on the IOS beta release) is able to “do science” accurately. We will see!

Public Service Announcement if you shop Menards and mail in their rebates! Be sure to share with others. I saw an article about it this morning and glad I did as I likely would have thrown this away! $128 in rebate would have been GONE!

What the heck! There has already been over 15 vehicles driving in front of our place today. That is more than a normal WEEK! ˘.J/k… Today started a bunch of awesome sales along hwy 92 and there happens to be one down the road. We hit about a dozen sales between here, Prague, and Weston. I might have to turn down my vehicle detection to reduce security notifications! Also, who has a red vehicle?!? According to my records, 98% of all vehicles out here are white!

The hatchery told me there were 500 catfish stocked in our pond before we moved in. I finally made it to Tractor Supply and got some fish food (Bomgaars doesn’t carry any unfortunately). Didn’t take the fish long to figure it out. I look forward to seeing how well I can train them before we start a significant “harvest” event to make room for some Bass.

I’d never hooked up a PTO shaft. I’d never connected tractor hydraulics. And I’d definitely never assembled a flail mower.

So naturally, what should have been a 2 hour job turned into 4 days of research and unknowns after putting this project off for nearly an entire month.

We post these videos to YouTube as well if you prefer to watch a longer video like this on a TV. Same on YouTube.

In this video, I assemble and install a Farmry flail mower on our John Deere 4052R from the perspective of someone who is VERY new to tractors and heavy equipment. This isn't a sponsored video, and it definitely isn't an expert showing you how easy everything is. It's a city guy who recently moved to an acreage figuring it out as he goes.

Some things went surprisingly well. Other things were pretty humbling and made it painfully obvious how much I still have to learn.

Once I finally had everything assembled, the 3pt hitch figured out and the hydraulics working, I put the Farmry to work mowing our ditch, trails and around the pond. That also gave me a chance to form some real opinions about this relatively inexpensive Chinese implement — what impressed me, what didn't, and whether I think it was worth buying.

And then I ran over a hidden hose with the mower!

For a few minutes, I thought I had created a much bigger problem than I actually had. Fortunately, the Farmry handled the encounter better than I did.

If you're an experienced tractor owner, you'll probably see several things in this video that make you shake your head. That's okay — we're learning, and helpful advice is always welcome.

And if you're another new acreage owner staring at a PTO shaft or hydraulic hoses wondering what you've gotten yourself into... you're definitely not alone.

We may have planted too many cherry tomatoes. This is 1 days harvest. It’s a big bowl, but Jay had to take a “fisherman” picture to try to make it look bigger. Need to go buy 14 heads of lettuce now to make a salad.

Get your votes in now… As you can see the is keeping the rains from touching us.. I think I see it on the other side of the road. Will the rain to the NW keep the trajectory and give us rain, or will it dissipate and go around us like has been the case all summer? Vote “It’ll hit ya” or “I’ll miss ya” in the comments! What say you Rusty Dawkins and US National Weather Service Omaha/Valley Nebraska?

Testing out the new Flail Mower (full un-sponsored review video will be posting soon so be sure to Follow/Subscribe). This little guy was lucky the spinning hammer blades on the mower missed him!

3rd leaking sprinkler valve of the summer. Like always it seems, I can't just do it right the first time. This time I forgot to put the spring back in before buttoning it back up... sigh.

Why does this leaking valve matter? Because all the rain today missed us AGAIN! But more importantly, when you are on a rural well, this little leak causes our pump to run more than it needs to. That's more wear and tear, and more electric usage. Our electric bill already averages ~$400/mo in the summer and about 50% higher than that in the winter!

We had some fun today at Malmo Acres when a friend brought an AR-style r***e that shoots GOLF BALLS! We didn't shoot AT Golf Balls, we actually shot THE Golf Balls!
