For some a hero is a person who sets an Olympic record, climbs a mountain, catches pass, or wears spandex/cape and underwear outside their pants. My heroes wear combat boots, flight suits, flak jackets, dog tags, badges, carry guns and go to work in harm’s way wearing a uniform.

The proper definition of hero is a person who puts their self at risk for benefit of others. I have been blessed to have kept company with heroes for most of my 81 years on earth.

Many on this Memorial Day many will take the time to visit cemeteries and will have an unforgettable experience. These are the final resting places for more than 3 million Americans who served in our armed forces – as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen and Marines.

Those now in uniform deserve our thanks, for no nation has ever had a better military force than the one we have today. And no accolade to those presently in our country’s service is greater than honoring their comrades-in-arms who preceded them on Memorial Day.
