Experience Tennessee
Monty’s Histerical Monuments spent some time in the beautiful town of Cowan, TN in Franklin County to learn more about their history and the Railroad. Cowan’s position at the base of The Cumberland Plateau was ideal for the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad to place a tunnel to conquer the steepest grade in North America at that time. From 1849-1852 The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was constructed by hand using enslaved people and local workers. This marvel enabled Cowan to become a “Helper District” using extra locomotives to push the trains over the mountain. These are still in use today making it one of the oldest in the country. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel is 2200ft long and is still in use today and is listed on the U. S. National Register of Historic Places.
From 1855-1985 a side rail known as The Mountain Goat Railroad that connected Cowan to Tracy City in Grundy County and their coal industry. Today the old rail bed “The Mountain Goat Trail” is being developed as a walking, running, hiking, and biking path. When finished this will connect Tracy City to Cowan.
The original station for the train sat empty after 1965 when passenger service was discontinued, it sat on Tennessee Ave on the opposite side of the tracks where it sits today. In the 1970’s locals purchased the Depot for $1 and moved it to its present location rather than it being demolished. Today it houses The Cowan Railroad Museum. It’s a great educational opportunity for train enthusiasts both young and old to learn more about the rich history here, while visiting be sure you walk through Minnie Pearl’s caboose that sits beside the museum. The museum is located at 108 S Front St. closed Mon-Wed, open Thurs-Sat 10a-4p, and Sundays 1-4p.
The property the museum sits on is Railroad Park and is bisected by an active railroad line operated by The CSX company so be aware to stay safe and alert. On the Tennessee Ave side is a replica of the home of Major William Russell who was also a mentor to Franklin County resident Davy Crockett.
Learning the fascinating history we have in our back yards is fun for all ages. Cowan is a quaint sidewalk town with some good restaurants and shops that look forward to your visit. While visiting Cowan take the scenic drive to Tracy City to visit The Grundy County Historic Society to learn more about their rich history and visit their beautiful town. Be sure to tell them all Hey Y’all sent you.

Experience Tennessee
This week Jeet Chet visited The Albatross Cafe at Arnold Golf Course in Tullahoma. Thanks to Kiauna Lawrence for this recommendation you were spot on! This place is AWESOME. Open Monday-Friday from 10a-2:30p, Saturdays 10a-2p, closed on Sundays. Set next to the pro shop overlooking the picturesque golf course with a choice of inside or outside dining. The menu offers enough variety to ensure everyone will be satisfied. With ample portions the choices are tempting including house favorites like the Albatross burger made with locally sourced beef, pesto chicken panini, Buffalo chicken wraps, chicken salad croissants, and pizzas just to name a few. We enjoyed an Albatross burger and the pesto chicken panini with home made chips. Those chips were awesome and were made fresh to order.
Dusty opened The Albatross in 2024, after selling cars he decided to test his kitchen skills that he learned from his mother. He is the master of this kitchen. It is open to the dining room and he proudly displays his skills as he prepares dishes to order. Logan welcomes regular and new customers and cheerfully assists Dusty. They worked together much like an orchestra.
Go visit them and tell them Hey Y’all said HEY. Don’t just Travel Tennessee…EXPERIENCE TENNESSEE!!
