Hey parents! We're casting a few roles for children ages 8-12 to appear in a series of web videos for a NH based home zipline and slackline manufacturer. The children will have to be comfortable safely ziplining roughly 20 feet above the ground. The shoot is scheduled for 8/25/15 in Bow, NH with 8/27/15 set as a rain date. Children will need to be available for an 8am crew call on those dates and will need to be able to travel to the location. If they are not available on the dates and times noted above, please do not apply! A parent or legal guardian will need to be on set throughout the shoot. Payment is involved so this will be a great opportunity for kids! If your children are interested, please send photographs or video of them dressed in active outdoor clothing along with their names and your contact information to the following e-mail address: [email protected].

We are also in need of a teen, 14-18 years of age, who is experienced on a slackline. The candidate should be able to perform numerous typical slackline tricks or routines easily and confidently. The shoot dates are the same as above. The candidate should have their own safety gear. Again, interested candidates should e-mail a photo or video with contact information to [email protected].

We saw these 'Do's and Don'ts for Advertising Copywriting' and thought they'd be good to share. These are points that we here in Media Services at WMUR strive to adhere to whenever we write copy. Obviously we hope that you'll come to us for new advertising material, but if you want to write your own advertising copy for TV or other media, these are great guidelines to keep in mind:

The Dos and Don'ts of Advertising Copywriting
(by Stella Mars, 10/24/2014)

Want to write a great spot and don’t know where to start? Here are our dos and don'ts of advertising copywriting that will get you headed in the right direction!

DO: Start with the basics.
Who is the client? What’s the product or service? Is there something unique or special about it? When is the sale or event? Why is this important? Where are you? How can people find you?

DO: Think “elevator speech”.
That’s ‘elevator speech' vs. 'keynote address’. What are the most important points you want to convey in your marketing creative? Don’t try to cram too much information into your spot. If you want to convey a few different messages, you may want to run a few different spots.

DO: Know your target consumer and this consumer’s lifestyle.
Be relatable. If you sell men’s shirts and you know that the majority of men’s shirts are purchased by women, talk to the women. Write as though you’re providing a solution to a particular problem. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes…what’s happening in his or her life?

DO: Write for the ear.
In your advertising creative, you should always write the way people speak. Use ‘you’re’ instead of ‘you are’.

DO: Paint pictures with words.
“Affordable luxury” says more than “moderately priced”.

DO: Give your call to action.
Be explicit about what that call to action is. Is there a sale this week? Are you recruiting nurses?

DO: Be aware that if you’re creating a situation, it should sound realistic.
In a conversation over the dinner table, you may say, “I’m worried about dad. He seems confused lately. Maybe we need to think about options for him”, but you probably wouldn’t say, “You know, I have been thinking that the retirement community down the street would be good for dad.”

DO: Be aware that nuances matter.
If you’re targeting someone younger than 30, there is a difference between “for 30 years” and “since 1984”. “Since 1984” may establish greater credibility as the listener instantly realizes that the service predates his/her birth date.

DO: Be local.
How do the locals reference the area or street? In the Boston area, “Route 9” will be more easily recognized than “Worcester Road” would be (even though Route 9 is Worcester Road).

DO: Give your website….without the “www.”
If your web address is long and convoluted, suggest that people find you online or on facebook.

DO: Be aware that consumers want to be invited, rather than forced.
If time allows, entice consumers in, rather than starting with a cold open mention of your product or service.

DO: Consider the timing of your campaign.
You may be writing months ahead, but you should be aware of what will be happening when your spots are airing. Will the leaves be changing? Is it school vacation week?

DO: Create different ads for different audiences.
If you’re targeting vastly different populations, you likely want to write different spots for those audiences. One size does not always fit all.

DO: Keep it simple.
A spot doesn’t have to be busy to be effective.

DO: Consider how much time you have.
Are you running a :60? :30? :15? :10? Are you giving yourself enough time to convey your message? You have a lot more room to tell a story in a minute than you do in fifteen seconds. Use copy paper. On our copy template, a standard :30 spot is 8 lines in a Times New Roman font, 12 point size, using capital letters. (A script that is too long will still be too long even if you put the script in smaller font!)

DO: Provide pronunciation guides for unfamiliar names or products.
Pruh-NOWNSE is better than Pra-nounse. If the word rhymes with something, please share that info. For example, does “row” rhyme with toe or cow?

DO: Write out numbers.
’149.99’ should be “one forty-nine ninety-nine”.

DON’T use confusing words or terms.
If you want to appeal to a broad base, using industry specific language can be off-putting. When people are confused, they tend to stop listening, either because they’re trying to figure out what was just said or because you’re taking ‘above their heads’. In either case, they’ve missed part of your message.

DON’T give phone numbers.
They’re difficult to remember and if people want it, they’ll ask Siri or Google it. If you’re number spells your name or is otherwise easy to remember, it can be used, but not in conjunction with a website. Then it’s just too much information!

DON’T start with a question.
If you open with “Do you have Athlete’s Foot” all the people who don’t have it immediately stop listening.

DON’T be over the top.
Yelling and gimmicks get attention, but negative attention leads to tune out.

DO: Rely on the experts.
Any great media partner you work with should have creative services that they can provide to help you take your advertising copywriting to the next level!

Spring weather is on the horizon and the long winter hibernation is coming to an end for businesses who advertise on television. Green grass, trees flush with leaves and blooming flowers always make for a beautiful backdrop for exterior shots. And like the traffic at the seacoast and prime lounging space at your favorite pool or beach, the schedule for shooting Spring/Summer TV commercials gets crowded very quickly. If your business' new TV commercial is expected to involve exterior shooting, call us at WMUR Media Services as soon as possible to schedule your Spring TV commercial shoot and beat the rush. Even if you still need a little more time to green up the lawn or plant those azaleas, calling early gives you the greatest slection of open shoot dates, even as far as a month out. Call us at 603-669-9999 and ask for Gary or Terry.

When creating a TV commercial or any other video production, the most critical part of the process is the pre-production. Obsessing over the details and script in this stage will pay off in a much smoother Production process, resulting in a more effective end product. Approach it like you would if you were assembling a bike. Your script is your set of detailed instructions detailing how to put the whole thing together. Imagine putting together a bike without the instructions...it'll take longer to do and probably won't work as well in the end. The same holds true for a successful video. The staff in the WMUR Media Services department has over 50 years of combined experience planning and putting together effective video productions for TV the web and any other marketing need.

When providing graphics, photos and logo files for HDTV always remember, bigger is better. Typical HDTV video files are 1920p x 1080p, so graphics produced and images shot as close to those dimensions as possible will look best. Sizing a smaller image up to fit that space creates more problems in visual quality than sizing bigger images down. WMUR Media Services can create full HDTV commercials solely using graphic and still image content, with no shooting involved, which cuts costs. But remember, good lighting and good image composition are key to making a graphics only spot look its best.
