Have you been on a Trail? Real chickens not the dance you see at weddings. In Nebraska they have a chicken dance trail, prairie chickens. I recently visited the National Willa Cather Center Memorial Prairie just a few miles south of Red Cloud, Nebraska It is 612 never been plowed acres of prairie.
Even though I live in the state of North Dakota. I don’t think I just stood and took in the sounds of the prairie, chirping crickets and a cow mooing in the distance, the wind whispering through the grass. The sunsets on the prairie are some of my favorites!
Prairie Chickens are part of the ecosystem. You will see them on one of the signs that are at a pull off area. The sign reads: “The females of this species use thick, tall grass patches to protect their ground nests. Areas with shorter grasses and good visibility are used by the males for their lek, where several gather at dawn to perform elaborate mating dances and calls on a "booming ground." The spring prairie chicken lek (their mating ritual) is one of the most breathtaking sights and sounds anywhere on the prairie.”
Have you seen a prairie chicken in the wild? I haven’t.
