Umbilical Cord Care Every New Mom Should Know

The umbilical cord is your baby’s very first “connection” to life and even after birth, it still needs gentle care until it naturally dries and falls off. Here’s how to keep your newborn safe, clean, and comfortable during this short healing period:

1: Keep It Clean & Dry
Avoid covering the cord with tight diapers. Fold the diaper down so air can reach it. Moisture slows down healing.

2: No Rubbing, No Alcohol (Unless Doctor Says Otherwise)
Simply clean with plain water if it gets dirty. Don’t tug, pull, or try to speed up the process.

Most cords drop between 1–3 weeks after birth. A little dried blood is normal.

Call Your Doctor If You Notice:
• Redness or swelling around the cord
• A foul smell or yellowish discharge
• Bleeding that doesn’t stop
• A soft pinkish lump after the cord falls off (could be a granuloma)

Note
Some babies develop a small bulge around the belly button especially when crying. Most close naturally as your child grows, but always check with your pediatrician for peace of mind.

🚼 CIRCUMCISION TALK!
Okay, moms, dads, aunties, uncles… let’s talk about THAT “snip-snip” 👀✂️

Did you know that circumcision is basically removing the fo****in (that little fold of skin at the tip of the p***s)? Some parents do it for religious reasons, some for health, some just because “it’s what everyone does.”

But listen, it’s not always sunshine and baby powder! 🌞🍼
👉 The area might look red or swollen for a few days.
👉 A yellowish crust? Normal.
👉 Pain? Well… let’s just say anesthesia is your baby’s best friend! 😅

Most babies heal in a week, but if the swelling, bleeding, or pain looks worse CALL YOUR DOCTOR ASAP 🚨

Now the real question 👇
Would you circumcise your son? Or do you think it should be his choice when he’s older? 🤷‍♀️

1.Clay or Chalk: Can block your intestines and cause infection or anemia.
2.Laundry Starch or Powder: Contains chemicals toxic to your body.
3.Raw Meat or Fish: Increases the risk of bacteria and parasites that can harm your baby.
4.Unripe or Bitter Palm Fruits: May cause stomach upset or premature contractions.
5.Excess Coffee or Energy Drinks: Too much caffeine affects your baby’s heartbeat and growth.

Anesthesia is the most common and effective pain relief during labor. It greatly reduces or eliminates any pain you feel below your waist. It can also be used if a C-section becomes necessary.

There are three types of Anesthesia: spinal, epidural and combined spinal/epidural. With each type, an anesthesiologist places medicine near the nerves in your lower back to “block” pain in a wide region of your body while you stay awake.
