With Spence’s Guide Service you will be fishing on board a 25 foot Crest Tri-Toon. Catfishing in South Carolina is a very popular sport. The Santee-Cooper Lakes are well known for their LARGE CATS! Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie vary from shallow swamp flats and back water ponds to large expanses of open water loaded with underwater structure. The lakes total 170,000 acres, have a maximum depth of 70 feet and are joined by a diversion canal. This area, known as “Santee Cooper Country”, has produced numerous world and state records for several species of fish. Cell: 803.983.8284

The weather this past Friday and Saturday was great, we had good winds even though they came out of the east/northeast, fishing was real good and the temp’s never got too high. In the afternoon the winds did pickup and making the fishing a little hard specially, Saturday afternoon. We ended up with a cooler full both days with 3 and 4 gallons of meat. Big fish on Saturday was 28lbs that was let go to fight another day with a 18lber.to eat, and the big fish on Sunday was 24lbs with a 14lber at the same time for a good double . Good luck fishing this summer and remember you do not need to kill all the big fish, a picture goes a long way.

The post spawn appears to have ended, yesterday was a real good day with the cooler full and caught one 31.5lb blue catfish that was let to fight another day. This young man is happy, his first time out fishing on a boat and to land a big catfish made his day.

05/03/2020

The Governor of South Carolina has given my guide service the go ahead to take people out fishing. I am limiting the number to 4 people on my boat right now until things get better. Thank you for being patience and good luck.

Not a bad day yesterday: even though the boat traffic was higher then I though it would be. Their was 32lbs of meat for 9 fish that we keep and let a 35lb and 34.3lb Blue Catfish go back so others can have the fun they had. The pictures show two happy fisher men.

It is mid March and the weather is getting better, the lake is around a half foot below full pool and is dirty but fishing is doing real good. Some fish have moved shallow and some are still holding in deep water. As the air temps warm up fishing will get much better and shallow water will pick fast as well as night fishing. Keep an eye open when running on the lake because of things are floating down the lake from the rivers above us. Remember your safety is first and fish come second, and if you should land a big fish remember a picture goes a long way so please let the bigger fish go back so others can have the fun you landing it.

Catfishing for the past few weeks has been real good, today we filled a cooler in 4 hours and CPR a nic 32lb blue catfish. Water level in the lake is going up and down 4 to 12 inch a week depending on how much rain we get up state. When ran along the dam this afternoon we found new logs moved in that were not there in the morning. Good luck this winter and remember a picture goes a long way so please let the big cats go others can have the fun you had their are lots of good eating size to be caught.

For the past week or so cat fishing has been doing real good, with the water temps being in the mid 50’s bait has stacked up and cat are following them. Not many big fish but a lot of good size to eat in the 4 to 10 lb range. I am talking numbers in the 20, 30 and 40’s being caught. Water level in the lake is 2.5 feet below full pool. For the next few weeks the weather is going to average with the temps in the 50’s with lows around 40. Stripers being caught as well, with nice size fish being caught. Good luck this fall and remember a picture goes a long way so please let the big fish go so others can have the fun you.

It is hard to believe that starting this Friday the fall weather will be moving into South Carolina according to the weather people. Stripers and catfish have been getting better as the water cools down and with these colder temps coming for the next 10 days it should happen faster. The water level in Lake Marion is about 3.70 feet below full pool; so be careful where you run. Most fish have been caught in open water around the trees in the center of the lake. Good number of both cats and stripers are being caught now with the belief that it is going to get better with this cooler weather. Good luck this fall and remember to let the big fish go so others can have the fun you had, there are a good number of smaller fish to eat. A picture goes a long way.

For the past two (2) weeks catfishing has been doing real good; the biggest cat caught during the Memorial Day weekend was a 35lb flathead catfish. Good numbers of cats are being caught as well, some days we have caught smaller fish and other days we find the larger fish. I have been moving all over Lake Marion, I have found them in 30 feet of water and the next day I catch them in 16 feet. Just watch the weather; we are to have storms come through our area in the afternoons for the next 7 days. Good luck this summer and remember a picture goes a long way so please let the big cats go back so others can have the fun you had.

It feels like summer, the temp’s are going to be in the 90’s this week leading up to Memorial Day weekend and the boat ramps and parking lots are full. For the last three (3) day’s cat fishing has been doing real good. The biggest catfish the people fishing with me have caught was a 34lb blue cat on Wednesday, 29lb blue cat on Thursday and a 28lb blue cat on Friday all of which were CPR’d. We have caught at least 10 fish per day with the average weight being 12lbs. With the temps going up the catfish will moving to their summer holding areas soon. Right now the water temps are in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s and as soon as the temps stay in the upper 80’s to 90’s they will move fast. Good luck this Summer and remember a picture goes a long way so Please let the bigger catfish go back so others can have the fun you had and to let them get even bigger.

Two more weeks to the Memorial Day weekend; the unofficial beginning of summer and Cat Fishing is doing real good on Santee Cooper lakes Marion and Moultrie. Right now the fisherman a catching good numbers of catfish. Water levels are at full pool covering most of the trees that is in the lake so watch where you run: If you are not sure where you are it is best to go slow. Thursday the 2nd of May we had our first fatality on Lake Marion. The young man was running at night and hit a utility pole in the middle of the creek in the fog.
Catfish are feeding on mussels and snails in the lake, right now they are starting to die off and float to the surface. This makes cat fishing hard because they are gorging them self’s.
If you are coming to Santee Cooper to fish with your own boat and do not know where to go it is best to fish the first day with a guide so you can learn where it is safe to run, fish and get bait that works.
Good luck this summer and remember a picture goes a long way and last forever, so let the big cats go so others can have the fun you. Tight lines.

For the past 10 days fishing has been doing OK; Some day’s catfishing is better than others but good numbers are being caught with some good sized ones as well. The American Shad and Blue Back Herring are still running in the rivers as well and should be for the next 21 days, they make great catfish bait as well as having fun catching them. The picture is of a 28lb blue catfish caught last Sunday the 2nd of March.
Good luck this spring fishing and remember fishing will get better as the month of March go on. And please let the trophy cats go back so others can have the fun you had, a picture goes a long way.

Here is a nice 28.4 lb bluecatfish that let go to fight a nother day. Catfishing has been real good for the past week; Most day’s I have caught a one of two over 30lbs. Right now I have been using Blue Back Herring as bait and drifting for them in 20 plus feet of water. When the when the wind blows hard it makes it hard to anchor for Flat Head catfish so I drift and cover water looking for big fish as well as numbers. Three days ago I did catch a nice 31lb Flathead drifting, it is not uncommon to catch flatheads drifting, I use bigger bait to catch bigger fish but do not get as many strikes from small fish. Here is a gentleman from Florida with a 31lb Blue Catfish that we let go after taking a few pictures. Remember a picture goes a long way so let trophy catfish so others can have the fun you had. Thank you and good luck.

Today is the first day of Summer; it has been feeling like summer for the past week or so. Catfishing has been doing OK with some days doing better then others. Sunday father’s day the people fishing with me caught 25 with the biggest being 20lbs. Tuesday night tried night fishing and got blowen off the lake with only bringing 2 fish in. For some reason we have high winds after the sun goes down making night fishing impossible. Fishing in the morning starting around 6:30 AM and fishing till 11 AM or untill it get’s to hot has-been working real good.

Even though the first day of summer is not till the 21st of June people consider Memorial Day weekend as the beginning of summer and you can tell it has arrived. With heat and the afternoon rains fishing can still be good. I had no one to take out today so I decided to look for catfish and to see how many people were out joy ridding. I did not get started fishing until 10 AM and I had the area to myself and it was great, in three hours I put 5 nice Blue Catfish in the boat with the biggest being 36 lbs and a another being 34 lbs and 29 lbs all of which were let go to fight another day and brought two back to eat a 8 lbs and 10 lbs. I quite when the afternoon rains moved in and the boat traffic picked up. Summer time catfishing can be good, all you have to do is get moving early around 6 AM and fish till noon when is start getting hot or go out late afternoon around 6 PM fish till 10 PM and you get both day time and evening fishing. Good luck this summer and remember a picture goes a long so let the big catfish go others can have the fun you.

Catfishing has been doing real good this past weeekend; night fishing and day time fishing has been produucing nice size and good numbers of Blue Catfish. The biggest catfish caught was a 28 lb Flathead. I can only see things getting better. Good luck this Spring and remember a picture goes a long way. 15 March 2018
March is half over and there is only 2 weeks left of the American Shad and Blue Back Herring run; our weather is cold in the mornings but it warms up through the day with most temp’s in the 60’s to 70’s for the next 10 days and low’s in the 50’s at night. Catfishing is doing real good and with the warmer weather coming for the next 10 days it should only get better. If anybody would like to come to South Carolina from PA, OH or NY to get away from the cold weather you should have good luck. I also do fly Fishing for Shad. Good luck this Spring.

This weekend was real good, both Saturday and today. Good numbers as well size; the biggest catfish on Saturday was 26 lbs and the biggest catfish today was 27 lbs. I was not the only guide to do well; other guides did as well or even better like a friend catching a 47 lbs blue catfish. John Kawecki is holding his 20 lb catfish and George Danrels and his son Haddan Danrels holding John’s 26 lb catfish on Saturday. The third picture is Marqarita holding her 24 lb catfish which was the first fish caught today it caused quite a problem when it wrapped up three other line together, the fourth picture is Bobby holding his 27 lb Blue Catfish and the last picture is what some of the catfish caught yesterday looks like today. All four (4) catfish were let go so others can have the fun they had. Remember a picture goes a long way.

Fishing report 15 Feb 2018
It’s that time of year again; here in South Carolina the weather is warming up and the fish are on the move. We can still get a cold front come through but for the most part it will stay nice. Stripers, American Shad and Herring are all moving up the rivers to spawn and with the two (2) rivers leading out of here we have ample area for fish to come into our lakes. Blue Catfish are on the move as well, right now blue cats are locating close to drop offs just outside of spawning flats just looking for an easy meal. March and April are real good months to catch a real big Blue Catfish. Last year our state record was broken with a 113 lber and just a week before a Bass fisherman caught a 94 lber on a plastic worm. American Shad are fun to catch, March is the month for them along with Blue Back Herring; herring make a better bait for catfish. Big Striper will be real good as well in the rivers that lead into our lakes, I do not fish the river leading in because of the current. I run a 25 foot tri-toon and it does like to turn in strong current, but handles rough water in the main lake real good. Good luck this spring and remember to only keep some to eat and let the big fish go back so others can have the fun you had. A picture goes a long way and many years.
