🌎🇷🇺 We hope to visit the Gulf of America someday.
No, not that Gulf of America.
The actual one.
The cold one. 🥶❄️🚢
The one in Russia.
Because, believe it or not, there is already a real Gulf of America — and it has existed for a very long time. It sits in far eastern Russia, off the coast of Siberia in the Bering Sea, and in Russian it’s called Залив Креста Америки (often translated as the Gulf of America or America Bay, depending on the specific location and translation). 🇷🇺🗺️
And unlike the Gulf of Mexico? 🌴☀️🐬
This one is VERY different.
Think less margaritas and beach chairs 🍹🏖️ and more icebreakers, cargo ships, brutal winters, and temperatures cold enough to make Texans rethink every life decision they’ve ever made. 🥶🧊🐻❄️
Average winter temperatures in parts of far eastern Russia near the Gulf of America can plunge well below freezing for months at a time, with winter highs often in the teens or lower Fahrenheit and long periods of snow and ice. ❄️🌨️🌬️
Meanwhile, the Gulf of Mexico? 🌊☀️
Warm waters.
Tropical storms.
Fishing boats.
Tourism.
Oil platforms.
Sea turtles. 🐢
Shrimp boats. 🍤
Florida beaches. 🏝️
Texas fishing towns. 🎣
Mexico’s Yucatán coast. 🇲🇽
One gulf gives you sunscreen. 😎☀️
The other gives you frostbite. 🥶🧤
Now, if you somehow missed this whole debate: President Donald Trump pushed to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in U.S. usage. 🇺🇸🗳️ Some government references and agencies began using the name domestically in certain contexts.
But here’s where geography gets funny. 😅
There was already a Gulf of America.
In Russia.
And if you want to go visit the actual Gulf of America right now…
Well… ✈️🇷🇺
You’re probably headed to Russia.
Which, at the moment, is not exactly topping most people’s vacation bucket lists. 😬
We genuinely hope someday it’s safe, peaceful, and reasonable for regular people from all countries — including the United States — to travel more freely and safely there. Because the landscapes of far eastern Russia are stunning, remote, and fascinating. 🌋🏔️🌊
But for now?
If somebody says they’re headed to the Gulf of America, we may have to ask:
The tropical one? 🌴☀️
Or the frozen Russian one? ❄️🚢😂
And here’s the practical reality: when ships, airlines, navigators, and global commerce need precision, they use internationally recognized names and charts. 🌍⚓
The Gulf of Mexico has been called the Gulf of Mexico for centuries — since long before the United States even existed — appearing on maps dating back to the Spanish colonial era. 📜🗺️🇪🇸 The name has remained widely recognized around the world because consistency matters when you’re talking about navigation, weather, trade, shipping, and emergency response.
The Gulf of Mexico is one of the busiest and most economically important bodies of water in the world, touching the coasts of the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. 🇺🇸🇲🇽🇨🇺 It supports major ports, international shipping, commercial fishing, energy production, tourism, and ecosystems that impact millions of people.
The Russian Gulf of America?
A whole different vibe. 😅
Remote.
Cold.
Sparse population.
Industrial ports.
Harsh winters.
Fishing and shipping.
Lots of ice.
Very few beach umbrellas. 🧊🚢🐟
So yes…
We’d love to visit the Gulf of America someday.
The real one.
In Russia. 🇷🇺❄️
But until then, we’ll probably settle for the Gulf of Mexico.
You know… the warm one. 🌴🌊🍹😂
