On today’s menu: “Crank Bearing Soup” 🤦🏻☠️💔
Here’s what we found when we pulled the oil pan on the 3.8L engine that just let go after ~1,000 miles: a fine metallic sludge coating everything. Not chunks. Not a thrown rod. Just slow, silent destruction.

Oil level was good. Cooler system was working. Pickup fully submerged.
All the bearings are toast — which means this wasn’t just one failure point. The whole motor was slowly starving of pressure.

The working theory? A failed oil pump pressure relief valve. Possibly stuck open or bleeding off too much pressure the whole trip.

After putting 350 miles of short distance / daily driving on the new motor - I figured driving it 300 miles to the starting point of our trip would be good to break it in… I tried to never let it stay in the same RPM for too long… usually let off the gas, let it fall back some, accelerated again and so on… well after just about an hour I already noticed the oil pressure gauge going down some… but still within spec.

After I stopped at the airport, we checked everything on the truck and noticed the solenoid of the oil pressure gauge being a bit loose… we tightened it up and moved on… no improvement but from here on I thought it might be a faulty gauge / solenoid… motor was running perfectly fine.

Eventually we made it to Land Between the Lakes… the rest of the story is in our new video 📺
