Beginning May 28th, Southwest Airlines will implement bag fees for the first time in its 54-year history, marking a significant change as they were previously the only airline to allow two checked bags for free.

However, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and those booking Business Select fares will continue to receive two complimentary checked bags. A-List members will be entitled to one free checked bag, while Rapid Rewards credit card holders will receive a "credit" for one bag (it's unclear if "credit" means anything different from free).

Although specific bag fees have yet to be announced, they are expected to be competitive with other airlines, likely around $35 per bag, per flight. Additionally, Southwest will introduce a new "Basic" fare option that offers less flexibility than current choices.

Travelers should note that this policy applies to bookings made on or after May 28th, so if you're planning a trip, it's wise to secure your reservations before that date.
