I have worked with a few good riders who had incredibly talented horses with this issue. Convincing them it wasn’t a disobedience or that the more you pushed the more the more trapped their horse felt was one of the most difficult parts of my job as a functional movement specialist and trainer.
I don’t receive any personal benefit for recommending any method or product. I’m just sharing what I feel is beneficial to our journey with horses. Tristan Tucker has a lot of free content to explore and gain a different perspective into what our horses are experiencing.
Ever felt like you're pushing your horse forward the whole ride? 🐴
Not once or twice. Every step. Leg on, ask again, keep him going, and the second you stop asking, he stops.
It's exhausting. And it's easy to blame yourself for it, or to decide he's just a lazy horse who needs more.
But a horse who needs constant pushing usually isn't refusing. His body is closed, and a closed body can't produce forward on its own. So every extra bit of leg goes into a system that has no room for it, and he tightens further.
The counterintuitive part is that the answer isn't more. It's opening the body first, so the forward has somewhere to come from. And then asking less, so he gets the chance to offer something himself.
Kristel found that with Guspini. She stopped telling him what to do, and he started taking her.
