Good Afternoon, As we move through the afternoon, we’re closely monitoring an outflow boundary left behind by the morning storms. Thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop along and south of this boundary (2/5 risk area) later today. Current indications suggest that most of the Heartland will remain north of the primary storm track and avoid the worst of the activity.

A few storms could brush our southwestern counties, but areas north of the boundary remain capped, which should limit storm development. As a result, the overall severe weather threat for most of the Heartland remains low this afternoon.

We’ll continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if anything changes.

SEVERE WEATHER SETUP – Monday, June 1
Today's severe weather environment may support the development of semi-discrete to discrete supercells, creating a localized risk for severe storms across the region.
Atmospheric instability is expected to be fairly strong, with CAPE values near 2,700 J/kg. Combined with southwesterly wind shear of 20–23 mph, conditions could favor storms capable of producing severe weather, including large hail.

Primary threats include: • Large hail up to 3.0 inches in diameter
• Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph
• A tornado cannot be ruled out, although the overall tornado risk currently appears low

A capping layer may limit storm development during the early stages of the day. However, if storms are able to break through the cap, rapid intensification will be possible.

If you are located within the risk area, remain alert for changing weather conditions and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Stay safe. Stay prepared. Stay weather aware.

Thunderstorms continue to impact extreme southeast MO, southern IL, extreme southwest IN and all of western KY this morning.
The heaviest storms are occurring over western KY where some localized flooding and hydroplaning issues are occurring.

This activity will continue to move southeast and out of the area over the next 2 hours or so.

A strong thunderstorm system advanced into the Southern Illinois area this morning, featuring a pronounced leading edge with low, dark cloud bases and rapidly increasing winds ahead of the rain core. The storm exhibited the appearance of a shelf-cloud structure commonly associated with strong outflow boundaries and advancing thunderstorms. Similar storm systems across Illinois this season have produced heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and localized tree damage.

The pictures below are from Marion Illinois as the storm moved through this morning

A line of severe thunderstorms is advancing east toward the St. Louis metro area and Southern Illinois. These storms may produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to quarter size, and torrential rainfall.

Rainfall rates could become intense enough to sharply reduce visibility and lead to localized flash flooding, especially as the system moves through during the morning commute. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and use extra caution on area roadways.
Continue to monitor forecasts and be ready to take action if Severe Thunderstorm Warnings or Flash Flood Warnings are issued for your location.

A couple rounds of strong to severe storms possible today. The first round will be around sunrise this morning with the severe threat between 7-11 am. The second round will depend on the timing of the first. If the first round slows down it may just re-intensify as it shifts south through the area. If it moves through quickly, then the atmosphere may destabilize enough for more robust storms this afternoon. If the second round does materialize then wind damage may become more widespread and the hail may be a bit larger. Stay tuned for updates!

⚠️ STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT INTO EARLY TOMORROW

A round of thunderstorms is expected to move through between 3 AM and 10 AM, with the highest storm chances in the area outlined in white.

The primary threats will be gusty winds, frequent lightning, and isolated flash flooding. At this time, a widespread or well-organized severe weather outbreak is not expected, but a few stronger storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, especially if storm clusters become more organized and develop bowing segments.

The tornado threat remains very low, though a brief, isolated spin-up cannot be completely ruled out.

Continue to monitor updates as we refine the forecast. Stay weather aware!
