Stopped by Charter 78153, Linda's LFL in Westboro MA on my way to work today. It had been a few months since I'd been here. The library is old (check out that low charter number!) and the books usually are too. I added 4 newer books plus straightened the shelves a bit.

What a happy way to start the day!

From the publisher's description:
Beauty and the Beast meets Labyrinth in this YA romantic fantasy about a deadly dream world and the shadow-cursed girl who must venture its depths to save her family, all while she falls in love with the prince of darkness.

🖤🩶🖤🩶🖤

The Kingdom of Noctis is plagued by Corruption: a curse that spreads through dreaming. The Shadow Bringer rules from his castle in the Dream Realm, stealing souls one dreamer at a time. Only an elixir, taken every night before sleeping, can ward off the dreams and halt Corruption. But for some, the allure of the Dream Realm proves too strong. Esmer Havenfall desperately wants to escape her dreadful village. When her sister, Eden, succumbs to Corruption and their elixir-dealing parents are accused of a horrific crime, Esmer’s life unravels into a nightmare. Then she dreams of the Shadow Bringer and learns that his sinister magic might be a part of her, too. Enticed by the prospect of ending her kingdom’s curse and avenging her family, Esmer follows him deeper within the Dream Realm. But the prince of darkness has a haunted past, one that might change the fate of Esmer’s kingdom–and her heart–forever.

Lush and vividly imagined, this seductive gothic fantasy is filled with magic, secrets, and dreamy shadow-haunted romance.

Current read and current view 📚⛱️

Finished my last read very early this morning so grabbed another off the TBR stack. I love a good fantasy read and The Whisperwicks series has great reviews. It's a middle grade read published by Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers.

I love a good middle grade or YA series! Especially those with alternate, magical worlds, like Labyrinth of Lost and Found has

🥳 Book Mail from and

I am so excited to have received a galley copy of The Hounding by Xenobe Purvis to share with the LFL community!

About the book: The Crucible meets The Virgin Suicides in this haunting debut about five sisters in a small village in eighteenth-century England whose neighbors are convinced they’re turning into dogs.

Even before the rumors about the Mansfield girls begin, Little Nettlebed is a village steeped in the uncanny, from strange creatures that wash up on the riverbank to portentous ravens gathering on the roofs of people about to die. But when the villagers start to hear barking, and one claims to see the Mansfield sisters transform before his very eyes, the allegations spark fascination and fear like nothing has before.

The truth is that though the inhabitants of Little Nettlebed have never much liked the Mansfield girls―a little odd, think some; a little high on themselves, perhaps―they’ve always had plenty to say about them. As the rotating perspectives of five villagers quickly make clear, now is no exception. Even if local belief in witchcraft is waning, an aversion to difference is as widespread as ever, and these conflicting narratives all point to the same ultimate conclusion: Something isn’t right in Little Nettlebed, and the sisters will be the ones to pay for it.

A richly atmospheric parable of the pleasures and perils of female defiance, The Hounding considers whether in any age it might be safer to be a dog than an unusual young girl.

Book Spotlight:
The Once and Future Me by Melissa Pace (Galley Copy)

Pub Date: 8/19/25 Henry Holt & Co

✨️ Perfect for fans of scifi, psychological thrillers, Girl Interrupted and Dark Matter

✨️ Description: Dark Matter meets Girl, Interrupted in this spellbinding psychological thriller about a young woman teetering on the edge of reality.

Virginia 1954. A young woman wakes, agitated and confused, on a patient transport bus arriving at Hanover State Psychiatric Hospital. She remembers nothing of her life before that moment, none of the dark things she must've seen—and done—that have forged her into such a skilled and cunning fighter. Once she's been subdued, doctors tell her she's Dorothy Frasier, a paranoid schizophrenic, committed to Hanover for treatments they hope will quell her increasingly violent delusions.

She’s certain they’re wrong—until disturbing visions begin to invade her reality: of a dystopian future where frantic scientists urge her to complete "the mission" and save humankind. Convinced it's Hanover causing the hallucinations, she tells no one, focuses only on escape… Until there's a visitor, a man whose loving face—and touch—she remembers, a man who knows all about her visions because he's spent years helping her cope with them: her husband, Paul Frasier.

Now she's sure of nothing, caught between two realities. Believe in the future, and she might save the world. Believe in her doctors and Paul, and she might save herself. She's desperate for answers, but she'll have to harness the darkness inside her to get them, risking her freedom, her mind, and ultimately her life in a heart-stopping quest for the truth.

Current read and current view

I read the 3rd in this series (Portrait of a Scotsman) and decided I needed to read the first two. Despite the romcom look of the covers these historical romances aren't light and fluffy. They spotlight the very real fight for women's rights during the Suffragette Movement. A fight which wasn't only about a woman's right to vote, but a woman's right to own property in her own name. Whether married or single a woman was essentially the property of a male, and those males controlled everything.

In Bringing Down the Duke the FMC is one of the first female students enrolled at Oxford. This too was something that was fought for, because the prevailing belief was women shouldn't be educated because it addled their brains. That women weren't able to handle it and it made them "unnatural".

This series is well worth reading, especially when one considers that the social issues addressed happened a relatively short time ago in history. Also, the fight for women's rights AS EQUAL to men still contines today.
