One of the questions I hear from new authors is, "If someone edits my book, will it still sound like me?"

It's an honest question, and it's one I completely understand.

Your story is personal. Your voice is part of what makes it yours. The last thing you want is for an editor to rewrite your book until it sounds like someone else wrote it.

That's not what good editing does.

At Integrity Publishing, my goal isn't to replace your voice. It's to help your voice and your heart shine through more clearly.

Sometimes that means rearranging a paragraph so your point lands with greater impact. Sometimes it means removing repetition, smoothing transitions, tightening a sentence, or asking a question that helps you dig a little deeper. Other times, it's simply catching the little things that distract readers from the message God has placed on your heart.

The best editing is often the kind readers never notice because they're so engaged with your story.

One of my greatest joys is hearing an author say, "That sounds exactly like me... ," or "That is what I meant to say!"

That's the goal.

Your personality should still come through. Your experiences should still feel authentic. Your readers should still recognize your heart. My role is simply to help your message communicate as clearly, concisely, and effectively as possible.

Proverbs 16:23 says, "The heart of the wise instructs his mouth and adds learning and persuasiveness to his lips" (AMPC).

Words matter. When they're thoughtfully refined without losing the heart behind them, they have an even greater opportunity to encourage, challenge, and point people to Jesus.

That's the kind of editing I believe in.

One of the questions I hear most often is, "How do I know when my manuscript is ready for professional review?"

It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should be complete and represent your very best work. Before you submit it, take time to read through it carefully, check for obvious spelling and grammar errors, verify your Scripture references and quotations, and make the revisions you already know it needs.

A manuscript review isn't designed to judge your writing. It's designed to help you understand where your manuscript stands and what the next steps should be.

At Integrity Publishing, our Initial Manuscript Review includes:

Have you ever reached the end of the day and thought, I barely accomplished anything? 🙋‍♀️ Can I confess to you I sometimes write those very words in my journal at night?

Maybe you only wrote one paragraph. Maybe you found the perfect Scripture for a chapter you've been wrestling with. Maybe you revised one page, researched one topic, or finally untangled a section that had been giving you trouble for weeks.

It may not feel like much, but don't underestimate what God can do with small, faithful steps.

We often measure progress by how much we finish. God often measures it by our willingness to keep showing up.

A book isn't written in a weekend. It's written one sentence at a time. One page at a time. One faithful decision at a time.

Looking back, I can see that every manuscript I've worked on was built through countless ordinary days that didn't seem particularly productive at the time. But those small efforts accumulated into something much bigger than any single writing session.

Zechariah 4:10a reminds us, "Who [with reason] despises the day of small things?" (AMPC).

If all you accomplished today was one faithful step, celebrate it. Don't get bogged down in what you weren't able to do. Rejoice in the one paragraph written. It is one more than yesterday. One page revised is one page stronger.

One act of obedience is never wasted in God's hands. Keep going. Small progress is still progress, and every faithful step is moving you closer to the work God has called you to complete.

Happy Friday, writers!

Every writer has a favorite way to capture ideas, and I don't think there's a wrong answer.

Some people love the feel of a favorite pen gliding across the pages of a notebook. There's something about slowing down and writing by hand that gives ideas room to develop.

Others head straight for the keyboard. They can think as fast as they type, rearrange sentences with a click, and watch a manuscript grow one page at a time.

Personally, I use both. Sometimes a notebook is the perfect place to brainstorm or jot down thoughts before they disappear. Other times, I want to get the words onto the screen as quickly as possible so I can keep up with my train of thought.

One of the things I love about writers is that inspiration rarely comes from the same place.

Sometimes an idea comes while you're reading Scripture and one verse seems to leap off the page. Other times, it's during prayer when God quietly impresses something on your heart. A conversation with a friend, a walk outside, a memory you hadn't thought about in years, or even an ordinary moment in your day can suddenly become the beginning of a chapter. I've gotten inspiration from dreams.

I've found that some of my best ideas arrive when I'm not trying to force them. They often come while I'm spending time with the Lord, driving down the road, or simply paying attention to what He's teaching me in my everyday life.

The more we walk with God, the more we begin to notice that He is always teaching us. The question is whether we're paying attention.

Today is the birthday of the man who first encouraged me to help other writers publish their books. Watching my husband walk out God's calling over the years has reminded me of something every writer needs to hear.

Have you ever walked through a season so transformative that it completely changed the way you see the world?

Sometimes those seasons begin quietly. A question leads to deeper study. A new understanding changes the way you live. Before long, what God has taught you begins encouraging the people around you.

That's exactly what happened with SK.

What began as a desire to better understand the relationship between music, worship, and Scripture grew into years of study. Those lessons changed the way he created music, deepened his walk with God, and eventually led him to encourage tens of thousands of people through his YouTube channel. Last month, those years of learning became his first book, Tuned to Heaven, because he realized the lessons God had taught him weren't meant to stay with him.

I wonder how often we do the opposite.

We assume everyone already knows what we've learned because we've lived with it for so long. We minimize the wisdom God patiently developed in us through ordinary days, difficult seasons, or years of faithful study.

But someone else may be standing today where you once stood, desperately needing the hope or understanding God has already given you.

Second Corinthians 1:4 says that God "comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble... so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress" (AMPC).

Don't bury the lesson God taught you. He doesn't cause bad things to happen in our lives, but He can surely use them in remarkable ways we never considered.

Whether it came through joy, waiting, heartache, or years of quiet faithfulness, God can use what changed you to strengthen someone else.

Happy birthday, SK. Thank you for living this truth and for reminding me that the lessons God teaches us are often the very ones He intends us to share.

One of the simplest ways to improve your writing doesn't require expensive software or years of experience.

Read your work out loud.

It sounds almost too simple to make a difference, but it's one of the first things I recommend to writers. When you hear your words instead of simply seeing them on the page, you'll begin noticing things your eyes have been skimming over. Some word processing programs will even read your work back to you. I use this feature every time I edit.

You'll hear sentences that seem to go on forever. You'll catch the same word repeated several times in a paragraph. Missing words suddenly become obvious. Dialogue begins to sound more natural... or you'll quickly realize it doesn't sound like something a real person would ever say.

Reading aloud also helps you hear the rhythm of your writing. Some sentences need to be shorter. Others need more variety. Sometimes all it takes is moving a phrase or replacing one word to make a paragraph flow much more smoothly.

I do this with my own writing, and I encourage the authors I work with to do the same. It's amazing how many improvements you can make before anyone else ever reads your manuscript.

Proverbs 15:23 says, "A man has joy in making an apt answer, and a word spoken at the right moment, how good it is!" (AMPC).

I pray the words of encouragement from this page come at just the right moment for you. For today, the encouragement is that words are meant to be heard as well as read. Before you call your next chapter finished, read it aloud. You might be surprised by what you discover.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see among new writers is the belief that they have to know everything before they begin.

They think they need to understand publishing, master grammar, build a large platform, become a confident speaker, learn marketing, and have every chapter perfectly mapped out before they're "ready." And I understand that, because I tend to be the same way.

But that's not how God usually works.

When God called Moses, he didn't suddenly become an eloquent speaker. When He called Peter, he wasn't already equipped to lead the early church. They had what they needed, and they had to lean on God for the provision of it at the right time. Throughout Scripture, we see God inviting ordinary people to take a step of obedience first, then faithfully teaching and equipping them along the way.

I've found that writing is much the same.

Every book I've worked on has taught me something new. Every manuscript has made me a better editor. Every author I've had the privilege of serving has stretched me to grow. If I had waited until I felt like an expert before saying yes to what God was calling me to do, Integrity Publishing would never have existed.

Proverbs 2:6 reminds us, "For the Lord gives skillful and godly wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding" (AMPC).

God isn't asking you to have every answer today. He's asking you to trust Him enough to take the next faithful step. As you continue walking in obedience, you'll discover that growth and calling often travel together.

So if you've been waiting until you feel "qualified," perhaps today is the day to stop waiting and simply begin.

Happy Friday, writers!

Every writer seems to have a favorite kind of place where the words come a little easier.

Would you rather spend a few uninterrupted hours writing at a quiet library, surrounded by shelves of books and the kind of silence that makes it easier to think? Or would you choose a cozy coffee shop with a warm drink, comfortable background noise, and plenty of people-watching whenever you need a creative break?

I love the atmosphere of a coffee shop, but I also know how quickly I can become more interested in everything happening around me than in the document open on my computer. There's a lovely place in Thomson, GA, that I desperately miss visiting.

A quiet library might help me accomplish more, although I would probably still wander through the bookshelves before I settled down to write.

I met with an author recently who said she spends an hour writing right before bed. You have to find the rhythm that works for you, but today, let's just dream a bit. ☺️

One of the things I enjoy most about working with writers is seeing how differently God has gifted each of us.

Some people can tell a story so vividly that you feel like you're standing right beside them. Others have a gift for explaining Scripture in a way that makes difficult truths easy to understand. Some writers can organize their thoughts effortlessly, while others have a knack for writing introductions that make you want to keep turning the page.

At the same time, every writer has areas where they struggle.

Maybe getting started feels overwhelming. Maybe endings are difficult. Perhaps grammar isn't your favorite thing, or maybe you have plenty to say but aren't quite sure how to organize it.

The encouraging part is that we don't all have the same strengths, and we don't all face the same challenges. That's one of the reasons communities like this are so valuable. We can learn from one another, celebrate each other's gifts, and encourage one another where the process feels hard.
